I'm pulling my hair (what's left) out with this. My lad has read all about html and subjected me to hours of cross examination, but we seem to have fallen at the first hurdle Big Cry He has tried both word and simple text to save the following:
<html>
<head>
<title>Galaxies</title>
</head>
<body> This is pants</body>
</html>

Saving it as a .html file, but when you view it through the browser it shows up as the code rather than what it should do, any ideas? Porsche Cayenne S Diesel 66 Plate

Agreed, works fine.

To test it you can put the HTML into notepad and save as "test.html" and then this should open in your default browser when you open it! Using notepad will ensure it is saved as plain test, so like Kaine says would suggest a problem in your editor and how it is saving it.

Pelyma - to be honest you need to avoid using software such as Word - its definetely worthwhile getting a proper editor to learn. Try 'Crimson Editor' for one. These editors do clever little things like highlighting different types of text (i.e. constants, strings, variable etc) which helps when the code gets more complicated.

That's why we switched to texteditor. WRT the Crimson editor, do you still type the code or is it a WYSIWYG program as I am keen that he actually learns what is going on - which to be fair he seems to get on what he has tried so far using www.davesite.com it is just saving the work. Porsche Cayenne S Diesel 66 Plate

Crimson Ed is just a code editor (no WYSIWYG) unfortunately

That HTML is fine - I've cut and pasted it into Notepad, saved it as test.html and opened it - it renders fine in IE as expected. I use something called Primalscript for any scripting I have to do, whether it be HTML, ASP, VBScript etc. It might be a little complicated for a 9yr old, but then in this day and age who knows.

There's always HTML for Dummies to fall back on, but I wonder if P Jr hasn't yet moved ahead of that? Confused

Pelyma

Just found this topic, a free software like notepad is textpad4 its free to download and the word wrap renders the text in a nice viewable format so when viewing larger coding pages you can make the changes easy where notepad word wrap makes reading hard!! Granted your not at that stage yet but just wanted to suggest it.

I know you said you did not want costs involved but if he is really keen on learning then maybe get dreamweaver yep it takes a bit to get used to and its costly but hey kids like a challenge right?!?!

Failing that if you want I have a hosted cms editor on my web server that my clients use to up date their sites, the editor can be limited to just a what you see is what you get editor and you can only edit parts of a web page or I can code it so that you can view the html this way you can create your html press save and it auto updates the online file, thus taking away the need to ftp the new file

Normally this is a charged service I do for clients as its using space on my server etc.. but if you want to get some hosting space then I could provide access to the tool and you and your son could play around with it

If you want more info drop me a message hopefully it makes sense what I am trying to say other wise drop me a message and can give you a contact number if you want a chat

Either way good luck and congrats to your son for wanting to learn something at that age Smile

Hi Anders

Thanks for the offer, its most generous. I'm going to see how he gets on ( a bit of struggling won't hurt) and if he starts to do something useful maybe Father Christmas might bring him something Wink Thumbs Up Porsche Cayenne S Diesel 66 Plate
