Current downturn and your cars worth ?!

It looks as if the whole car market is completely shag*ed at the moment....I know, no sh*t sherlock..................but its only when you actually try and cut a deal that you realise that our once proud and wanted tanks are effectively becoming worthless day by day. Shocked

Based on this, I am quite glad I am not in the car game (sorry James), it is a real cut throat world out there. Discounts are plain silly and part exchange offers are plain rude. Twisted Evil

Question is, based on the horrendous depreciation that most cars are facing, who the hell, aside from the die hards, is going to walk into a dealer and say "hey, so I lose £40k over 2.5 years.....brilliant, where do I sign".....this surely now means that the "premium" brands are screwed. Maybe the eco idiots have finally won and we are all only just realising it.....maybe this is all a dream or simply, maybe I was born with it, maybe its maybelline? Who knows. Exclamation

One thing is for sure though, from a personal perspective, I for one will NOT be upgrading in the short to medium term. Big Cry

PS: I still find it hilarious that stealers (apologies James again) are still offering 53/04 reg FFRR's at £19k......LMAO, thats a lot of rusty metal on their forecourts, you can get these for £12k now quite easily. Big Daddy S/C 55 reg/06 reg - now average out at £20-25k !!!!!!

Hence manufacturers incresingly looking to reduce their average CO2 outputs by introducing hybrids.

Not many manufacturers (Othe than Toyota) actually believe this is a long term solution, however customers demand this latest fad and so manufacturers end up pumping millions into developing them Rolling Eyes Runner up - 2009 Best Avatar Award Sad

Surely though it is the cost of changing that matters? If your car is now worth £2.50 and the next one has dropped by the same percentage the difference has at worst stayed the same, at best got closer? What is stopping me change is the fact of having a job that needs the financial markets performing well to earn well and not knowing how long the down turn will last. Porsche Cayenne S Diesel 66 Plate

With WW here - that's why I kept the RRS after the 3 years. Will probably keep for another 2 years and see what's happening. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

FWIW - my intentions are to run it into the ground and when I start having to throw good money after bad, it will go.

United Kingdom 2008 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Stornoway Grey

For the sake of completeness, and also as Im looking to buy a recent TDV8, what exactly is going on out there?

I seriously am looking to buy, however with the state of the market only getting worse Im not in a hurry

My facts so far are as follows for offers on a 2008 TDV8 HSE:

New 45,600 for a 8.5 model year

Used Early 08 platers, 32k private versus 34k from a franchised dealer after haggling

I agree with WW,VA, and tumshie, it really is madness to chuck good money away on upgrading these type of vehicles now. We bought them, and we're stuffed, I mean stuck with them, to a certain extent. I hate to say it, but Land Rover may as well chop down to a 1 day week Shocked , the future looks pretty bleak me thinks. Guys,

Still a couple of trading days to go in September and it looks like we will retail exactly the same number of units as last September (having sold 4x RRS yesterday, all to be delivered before Tuesday night). Granted, it looks like our branch is bucking a general trend, and granted margins are less, and granted I do still have two forum members PX's on my forecourt, but it's really not that bad I assure you. I have been with the brand since the late 90's and feel that passionate about the green oval that I'm not about to jump ship to Toyota or Lexus WW! In fact one of those brands is suffering from a fairly large drop in market share currently.

As mentioned in a previous post, it is the cost to change that is the important factor. I've said before (see the For Sale & Wanted section), that many customers are part-exchanging their current vehicles (that they own outright) and going into new vehicles on finance agreements with GMFV's (Guarantee Minimum Future Values), so as to let the finance houses take the risk of the residual values.

I can't think that there are many company's selling 'luxury goods' that are not feeling the pinch at the moment and having to work smarter and leaner (HBOS etc). If anything it is a good thing for the consumer as dealerships are forced to become more professional and give a better level of customer care, not only when selling, but also in terms of Aftersales care.

I was chatting to the chap who owns a Chinese restaurant in our village (strange but true).... Whilst waiting for my sweet and sour pork (34) and chicken fried rice (8b), he asked me how many times a month I would have bought a take-away from him when I first moved into the village 5 years ago. I replied, "probably a couple of times a month I'd say." He then asked if the 'credit crunch' had affected the number of times I would now visit. I explained that "Well my mortgage has increased slightly and the future perhaps looks bleak for 12 months or so, so I guess yes I'd probably think twice before visiting and have a take-away once a month now." He then pointed out that if everyone did the same in the village then his turnover and net profit would be halved over night...... and they have poor bloke!! I can honestly say that CHPR is not suffering from trading shifts as dramatic as that! Confused

Do we make less unnecessary journeys?..... yes, so the petrol forecourts suffer.
Do we shop as Asda as opposed to Waitrose?...... perhaps (perhaps not WW), so they suffer.
Do we splash out on a new suit, or make this one last another month?
Do I have 2 Chinese take-aways a month or now just one....................

Etc etc etc, 95% of retailers are in the same boat. Apart from JJB Sports (I think) who I understand are c200% up on the same period last year!

So, let's not get too down about things..... I you don't think you should change at the moment then don't.... If you do think you should change then do (and take advantage of some impressive deals).... Either fund yourself or let the finance company take the risk... But above all come to CHPR! Whistle

And relax........

James Thumbs Up

James

Great post !!!!!

Id dearly love to buy an 08 plate TDV8

Assuming it costs me 34k today from a franchise then what kind of GFV could I expect at 3 years from now and at what kind of APR?

Many thanks

Theo
