Gearbox hesitation

Hi,

I have previously owned a D3 but the slight hesitation experienced when applying brakes at a junction and trying to accelerate away drove me mad. Can anyone tell me if this still exists on the RRS TDV8 as I'm looking to buy one.

Thanks

My own experience is: no it doesn't exist. However, if on a slight gradiant and stationary, the gearbox may decide to drop it in 1st gear instead of the usual 2nd and will hesitate whilst it does so. This is not a problem with the amount of torque available from the TDV8 at low revs and is barely noticeable. If you lived in San Fransico it might be more of an issue! Go ahead with your purchase. Gone - 2008 TDV8, Stornoway Grey, ebony, zabrano trim, TV, Tasmods, mudflaps.

Didn't happen with my previous '06 RRS, but my new '08 Sport has this hesitiation.

Like you dazzpowder I'm been driven mad by it too Sad

It also manifests itself when trying to overtake, the gear box has a lag before it changes down, despite the throttle being buried in the floor.

Another case is when pulling out of a junction or onto a roundabout from a rolling start, you press the accelerator & for a few seconds nothing happens.

It does however, seem to be getting a little less evident as time passes though Confused

Perhaps I'm just getting used to it.

It is less intrusive on the TDV8 but still there - due to how the EGR system works. There was a roadtest in one of the car magazines (could be Autocar, but I don't remember) where a LR engineer confirmed this.

I find that if you put the pedal down quickly and fully it makes the lag worse and the resultant power surge more violent.
If I put the pedal down slower it hesitates less and you can feel it "bite" and "dig in" .

Once it's digging in you can floor it and you tske off like your hairs on fire.

Agreed Thumbs Up

That could be why I’m noticing less these days, as I am feathering or priming the throttle before making a manoeuvre.

I believe this is also an element of turbo lag as (read in one of the many car mags) that this is a common gripe from TDV6 owners.

TDV8 is supposed to be much better but you will always get it to a greater or lesser degree as this is the nature of how a turbo engine works. Runner up - 2009 Best Avatar Award Sad

Hi ST,

Yes there is a bit or turbo lag but you can see how little by using command shift and forcing it into a gear....if you are in , say second rolling up towards a roundabout / trafficlight and then boot it mine takes off like a scalded cat with very little lag.

This gave me the conclusion that the gearbox hesitation (or more factually the gearbox telling the engine to ease off while it decides to go down a gear or not) is the pain in our necks.

This is probably to give the gearbox an easy life with limited torque shock but if you drive another car with this gearbox the change is much more "firm" and decisive .
Maybe the LR bods have done this deliberately to give the car more waftability?

Maybe the remap boys , Pete Bell , maybe can tell us if it's possible to change the shift points and severity with remapping?

Read this guys, it explains why you get the hesitation: http://www.autocar.co.uk/CarReviews/FirstD...SE/223073/

The tdv8 has very little turbo lag, helped to the fact that it's twin-turbo.

here's the relevant bit:

Quote:
"Our only grumble, highlighted on tight, twisty roads, is the engine’s sluggishness to pull out of low-speed corners. Chief engine engineer Grant Horne puts it down to the EGR – the exhaust gas recirculation system for scrubbing pollutants out of the tailpipe – which fills the intake with smoky air that has to be purged before more fuel can be pumped in. Until that happens, the engine just doesn’t pull.

There is a solution, though: snick the command shift lever to the left and drive the Sport like a manual. That keeps the engine percolating and the exhaust gases flowing."

BigMart, that's a very good point. That is something I used to do a while back when slowing down for speed bumps as the 'lag effect' really got on my nerves.

Bone idle as I am, I can't be arsed doing that now.

Completely forgot about that Embarassed I put it down to sunstroke... Whistle Runner up - 2009 Best Avatar Award Sad

That's exactly what it feels like Thumbs Up

I've often thought of the lag, as if something was getting choked up & had to clear itself, resulting in a burst of speed, when it does.

At least now we know what causes it, but it doesn't help with the annoyance of it Sad

I wonder though why my previous '06 RRS didn't display as severe symptoms as my '08 does ??

The other thing which will limit torque is the steering angle sensor.

To prevent hooliganism , the fun police have limited the power unless the wheel is almost straight to help with wheelspin and torque steer.

try it if you are curious....gravel car park , lots of lock , foot down......do drama.

I might blank off my egr to see if it helps.

Anyone blanked the egr??? does it help?
