Lucky Boy Tonight

I put some 22" whells on my car last week ,tonight I hit a huge pothole ,I was near a fuel station so pulled in and tried to put air in the tyre but noticed thre tyre was ripped ,my brother came down to give me a hand and after removing the spare we jacked the car up (In the wrong place I have now been told by the recovery guy).

Any way I was holding the jack in place and bruv was pulling out the wheel when the jack gave way and buckled collaping the arch of the car onto me bruvs arms .I couldnt move it an inch two other guys ran over and between us we got his arm out.Net result one broken arm and nerve dammage to his hand, but it could have been much worse .The recovery guy said he has seen pleny of these jacks collaping and there is only one place it can be fitted safely ,but with a flat tyre and side steps there not a lot of room to see much ..Lesson learned ..LR assistance from now on ..
Oh and we managed to dammage a fair bit of bodywork too but who gives a Censored when people are getting hurt ..

Bad luck mate... we know the supplied jack isn't up to the job and as a lot of people will tell you, LRA all the time for wheel changing. Sorry you had to learn that the hard way Sad Hope your bro's arm recovers quickly.

I must admit I have never even thought of looking at the jack and the tools supplied, and guess what, I'm not gonna bother, if I get a flat I will call LRA. I would be surprised if you could shift the wheelnuts anyway with the standard wheelbrace that the manufactures supply. Speedy recovery, Steve. Speed Limits! not where I live!

Jacks

Never trusted scissor jacks or bottle jacks and mine stays in the boot. I'm buying a new set of wheels and tyres off Discowex soon and we're meeting in a hotel car park in Ireland to put all 4 of them on. I'll be taking my hydraulic trolley jack with me & using an axle stand as an extra safety measure. Glad your brother is relatively OK Pedro - could have been much worse. I use an electric wrench for the wheel nuts that runs off the car battery or a 12v socket - it's brill.

I alaways thought Landrover took jacking safety seriosly. My disco 1 and 2 had proper hydraulic bottle jacks with a "v" cradle to locate on the axle. Very sturdy and the car could move quite a bit without falling off the jack.
I know we havent got solid axles and cant use the same type of cradle but it wouldnt take much thought to have a 2 inch flat disc with a pip in the middle to locate on the jacking point.

I'll get one fabricated to fit a bottle jack and take a few snaps.

Theres no way I'd use the standard jack now. Shame on you Landrover .
I'm sure LR won't want to discuss compensation for failure of the standard jack. Rolling Eyes

PETE..Good Luck to your Bruv.

Not sure why LR don't provide anything more capable. I've been on a couple of LREs where the instructors have made clear the jack's inability to support the car properly and that LRA should be called whenever you need to change a wheel.

Surely if the jack is not up to scratch and a injury occurs a claim could be made again LR

Obvious the correct positioning of the jack would play a part in the claim.

Anyway that was my thought, but also I hope your brothers arm and hand will be better in the long run and the nerve damage isn't to severe

I have side bars on my FL2, I beleive these have to be removed out of the way prior to jacking the car, but i was never told this by the dealer or how to do this Shocked

I agree with VA. Sue their sorry arses!!

What were LR thinking when they designed that jack? The car has 2 chassis and they want to save weight on the f-ing jack.....

What type of jack does the FFRR come with?

The jacks are stretched to the limit and you must be sure to chock the wheels, front and back, my D3 fell off the jack, fortunately no damage done. Unfortunately unless you were following the manual I don't think you'd stand a chance of suing them. It seems stupid for the sake of £100 on the price for a really good bottle jack LR risk this. Hope your brother recovers quickly. Porsche Cayenne S Diesel 66 Plate
