I had never heard the term Pikey until I started to read these and the D3 forums. Up here the same folks are known as the Tinks or Tinkers, but they are also called Travelling Folk in politer circles! When I was a kid there was a family of them who lived in a big "tent" (canvas sheets hung over branches rather than something from Blacks of Greenock!) - they were proper "country" folks as opposed to the thieving gits of today with their huge caravans. They worked as itinerant workers on farms and for local businesses and the kids even went to the local school.
