New Car Tax Bands - HMG Raising Revenue...

I heard with alarm the new car tax being introdued by the government that will know doubt effect any of us who own Land Rover or Range Rover vehicles.

Having just bought my first Range Rover Sport TDV6 - 08 on the 1st of March my Road Tax cost £300

From next year I am going to have to pay £400 per year for the pleasure of having worked hard to own a nice car in road fund licence.

I doubt the rise in tax will make many owners change vehicle, what does annoy me is that in the future should I change car that I am going to have to more even more tax.

I know one thing that I won't be voting labour any time soon..

Owning a 4 x 4 it seems in the eyes of the chancellor to be a crime and a revenue raiser.

Yep, and if you fancy trading in for a shiny new one in 2010, then 950 of your British pounds is required for the 1st year, a so called "showroom tax".........lest us not forget this is in ADDITION to the already hideous amounts of tax on a car in this country. Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

The alternative??...well we're British, naturally we just take it on the chin, yes we might have a couple days of debate / moaning, but the reality is the Gov't know there is no alternative to the car, so they will continue to clobber the motorist. Simple economics when you think about it. Shocked

As for the "I won't be voting for them" brigade.......really.......from where I am sitting, there really is NO alternative. I guess we will all continue burying our heads in the sand, whilst caressing our stiff upper lips....after all, that is what is now expected. Rolling Eyes

That's the thing...what can we do about it? Even the big guns get bought off, i.e. Transport 2007 / haulage association etc...............at the last attempt in Southampton (Dec 07) there was one person protesting, oh and I think an astmatic dog called Colin Rolling Eyes ...unbelievable!!

We need an Arthur Scargill type (but this time with a brain) to stand up and get Joe public rallying.....someone to tell these idiots in power that enough is enough...................I guess we have to thank the inventor of the phrase "Global warming" for all this horse {sheet}.......funny how everyone I speak to think's its all a load of old horse radish, yet we all keep coming back for another ball breaking session!!?? I go on the basis that in 2005, approx 50% of the worlds leading scientists said that it was probable that we are going through a warming phase and that the earth is hotting up......yet approx 40% disagreed and 10% were mixing chemicals or something. Whoever said man made Co2 was responsible was a genius (for the Gov'ts). Voila an open invitation for cash rasing activities the world over. I digress.

TBH though, lest us say that Joe public did rally round and find a bit of fighting power, how long would it be until the protest or rallying wained.....a few days, possibly a week?? One things for sure, we have all been conditioned, which is why the Gov't would take no notice, they know that support would buckle within days and that everyone would HAVE to return to work or their daily pleasures........which takes us full circle, what can we do about it? What really annoys me is that I live in the country side in the south west of england (somerset) the ownership of a 4 x 4 for me is essential due to the roads in my area being really bad in the winter.

What the government are doing is taxing 4 x 4 owners who live in the countryside for owning an essential vehicle, we often in my area have adverse weather and flooding from time to time, an average family car would mean that on those days when the weather is really bad that I would not be able to leave home or go to work.

I have to admit that owning a 4 x 4 and living in a city is an issue in the eye's of some people but it is a matter of personal choice and shouldn't be used by government as an excuse to tax the hell out of the motorist.

I often travel to the North of Scotland and landrover ownership for many is an essential way of life, the same also applies in the farming community, this tax will effect 110 and 90's as well as all the other landrover models.

The danger with this new tax is that it risks jobs in Solihull if there is a downturn in sales of Landrovers.

It is time 4 x 4 drivers who live in the countryside are given a break instead of being taxed due to the so called Chelsea Tractor, I for one will be righting to my MP later today.

Guess Will_Wonka that your get hit for being a Land Rover owner x 3, I agree that is total crap. I paid my Carbon Offset when I bought my RRS for 45,000 miles. I only do about 8,000 a year.
However your "road warrior" salesman in his 2.0 Mondeo or Vectra is going to chuck out a whole load more CO2 than me.
As much as I hate paying over the top for fuel the fairer system would be just tax fuel, scrap ved, scrap "showroom tax", conngestion charge and let the people that use the road the most, pay the most Thumbs Up
But that would be far too simple Whistle

Also the goverment went on about cars with the lowest emmisions will pay no tax, well my Kwak meets Euro3 emmisions, but they will still tax me........

Whilst I agree we should stand up and say something, nothing stops this govt! Write to your MP, march on Downing St, Campaign on the web..... because if you think we live in a democracy, think again Question

We have more "spy" cameras, tracking, taxiation, Euro Idiots (sorry MP's) and PC stupidity than anywhere else I can think of, the goverment has become a dictatorship. A PM by default and infact Europe is fast looking like the former USSR which we spent years trying to break up Whistle

But what do I know, I only pay tax on my wages... tax on my car.... tax on fuel... road tax... insurance tax.. stamp duty (tax).... vat..... congestion charge (tax)..... life insurance (with tax).... oh and when I die, my kids will pay tax on what I leave for them Shocked

So now there is even more incentive for LR to put a hybrid LRX into production before March 2010. If they don't they are going to loose a huge number of customers. Nobody except those who earn fortunes in the urban areas of the SE will be able to afford to buy new ones and the rest of us will not sell on our old ones because they won't be worth anything.................................... 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

I see they are planning to colour code the tax disc i.e red for unsocial high polluters and green for the good guys.

I wonder how long it will be before we have to paint our RRS Red!

Are we driving anti social targets.

Maybe it was better when we all lived in caves. I am begining to wonder why we go to work and try to better our lives.

On a slightly different subject, I live in kent and the potholes in the road are so big and unrepaired that a 4x4 will soon be the only way of getting around!

Just like normal then Wink

Nothing more to add than anyone else hasn't already said. I don't know what the answer is.... you can always vote against the current government at the next general election, but who's to say it'll be any better? All politicians are as bad as each other. Did you hear about Ed Balls' saying "So what?" to Cameron's comment about how the current govt are legislating the most types of taxation for a govt ever? That is pretty much it - nobody cares about being fair to the general population.
