I'm looking at purchasing a RRS supercharged after the new year.

My question is, what is the situation with fitting snow chains to a RRS?

The reason I ask is because I've sent away for a brochure, and according to the info in the brochure "snow chains cannot be fitted" to any of the rims supplied, be it 18, 19 & 20 inch.

This I find strange, since as most Aussies will know snow chains are a compulsory requirement in the Aust Alps during winter - they have to be carried at all times and need to be fitted when requested.

Can anyone shed light on the issue please.

I would argue that the reason for compulsory chains in Aust is mainly the inexperience & inability of many drivers here when it comes to driving in the snow. Also the governments here are very protective and love regulating.

And while, the mountain roads do get cleared, it is rudimentary - meaning that if the weather/blizzard is very strong it gets the better of them: and, on top of it all, there is only clearing of snow, bot no spraying of grit/sand/salts.

If you are still interested, Kuke, the fitting of chains gets staged progressively, according to the level of snow/ice hazard.
Eg. the lowest level of hazard is - carry chains at all times.
Next is - fitting chains to 2WD.
Then - fitting chains to all vehicles.
Finally, if the road is really bad - road closed to all vehicles.

And here I'm talking about main sealed highways; most of 4x4 tracks that have snow on them get closed for the winter. The only opportunity we have here to go off road on snow is when there are falls down to lower levels.

Drew a blank unfortunately. Note my comments about about the LR genuine chains - check about the widths before you buy. The 19' rims the cars here are supplied with wider tires than the UK cars for which these chains are made.

Land Rover part number is LR005737. Fits 18" and 19" to front wheels only.

Why not just carry a set until it gets to stage 3 ie all vehicles and then get the hell out of there, thus complying with the law.

But a set of 19" with winter tyres would be a worthy purchase by the sounds of it for the winter. TDV6 - gone

depends how much on mountain you do. most problem is from the ice and not snow. if you do alot of skiing then get snow tyres as I do -from Richard at SNOWTYRES.COM.AU in Camberwell. Also known as Roof Carrier Systems. He has great knowledge on the chains. With snow tyres /4wd you will not need chains.Just carry and old pair(which you know will not fit) just in case you are checked.See Richard

Just as a suggestion, depending on which resorts your are skiing is to call National Parks.

Victoria is mandatory to carry chains regardless of vehicle or tyre type. NSW were still figuring out whether they were going to mandate Snow Tyres OR Snow Chains OR Both.

The reasoning behind this was down to the lowest common denominator - the intellectual ability of the guys checking vehicles, and the thinking was that asking them to check for a set of chains regardless of tires was easier than training them to look for the snowflake symbol on the sides of the tyres.

As Trader points out as well it depends on how much on snow stuff you do. For the guys living down here in the mountains a set of snow tyres may be appropriate, however if you are doing the weekend commute from Sydney, I am not sure how long the tyres would last at the higher road temperatures. Snow tyres are also a change in tyre compound that copes better at lower temperatures and are not just a different tread pattern.

Possible alternate to chains may be a sock for the tyre, one brand is autosock, but this is yet to be ratified as an alternate to a chain but people are working on it. these are good for rims tyre suspension conbinations with limited clearance. 2.7 RRS TDV6, java black, Cruise, Sunroof, tow pack, Tasmod Sills, brembos, 20 inch rims, tinted windows, premium ice, adaptive bi xenons.
