COST OF DIESEL IN SYDNEY?

Hi all on the forum,
I thoroughly enjoy this forum.
I have a RRS TDV8, one of the first delivered here in Aust. I've never had a Range Rover before, but was impressed by the vehicle and the overall style of the beast.
My question: How is it that diesel prices only seem to keep rising, way out of all proportion, compared to U/L petrol? Today I paid $1.53.9 At a Caltex servo at Kensington in Sydney. Am I incorrect in thinking diesel is a bi-product of petrol refinment. If so we are being grossly ripped off and shouldn't something be said to the powers-that-be??? Mad

Brownie, i think the biggest rip off is the way the oil companies can put the prices up before the weekend and holidays. I filled the car up today at a Shell garage and it was about 1.49 a litre. In the UK the govt tax it to death hence why diesel is usually about 2.5 dollars per litre, here its just seems the oil companies have a licence to rob you blind.

Hi Jim, the answer from the oil companies is "That's just market forces in action. Anyway the general public know when the prices rise and fall, and buy accordingly!" What an answer, it's totally b Censored t.

Brownie, the price of diesel is really set by the supply and demand for the product in Asia. It is not directly related to the cost of production. Also, you will find that diesel is normally (mostly, generally etc) more expensive in the summer months when world demand is high (driven by the northern hemisphere).

Also in our market, diesel prices are not discounted to the same extent as petrol prices. Much less diesel is sold at retail and therefore service stations concentrate on petrol discounting to drive overall fuel sales volumes.

I buy about 250-300 million litres of the stuff annually and don't even get a discount for my private usage.

Thanks StephenW, you seem to have more knowledge about the subject than most, but still feel very ripped off when at the bowser.
Your Sports is tricked more than the norm too. You must get right off the bitumin at times. They really are the best at what they do, agree?

Brownie, I don't get out in the bush enough. For the past three years I have
been working in Sydney but living in Canberra and the commuting has been a
pain. Hopefully, I'll get to do a bit more this year as I start a new job in
Canberra. The RRS, like all LR products is very good offroad. Even the
Freelander can get into and out of some quite difficult areas if driven
correctly. The only thing that holds back the RRS is the availability of
good offroad tyres. Even with the standard tyres, it makes a average offroad
driver look like an expert.
