To Supercharge or not?

I'm looking at buying a RRS to replace my R32 as it looks like a stunning car and has tons of space and ground clearance - ideal for work and the 10 speedbumps on the way to my house!

I've driven the Disco 2.7 and a 4.2 SC RRS, preferring the 4.2 power but only doing 6000 or so miles per year mpg wouldn't be too much of an issue (Golf gets 15). The Disco is too big for my parking space and I prefer the look of the RRS by far.

I'd like to buy second hand, no more than mid 30's and quite fancy something with at least a years warranty.

Is the 4.2SC car the one to go for - I've been told they are difficult to sell on and they seem the same price second hand as a 2.7HSE, but with tons of toys? I take it the SC gets about 12mpg and the 2.7 Diesel about 18mpg?

Any advice from owners would be great!

Cheers

Steve

The TDv6 should give better than 18mpg........................... I got 25-27mpg in day to day driving and in excess of 30mpg on the motorway at steady speed, BUT living in rural Central Scotland I do hardy any stop start commuter or inner city driving. I think most of the guys on the forums who are doing daily commutes are getting 21-25mpg from their V6s'.

You will be able to pick up a decent 24-30 month old (the oldest cars are only 30 months old)car for £35-36k, but anything younger expect to pay £40k+ There will still be 6 months factory warranty left on it as they all came with 3 years. You will also get a Land Rover warrnaty if you buy "approved" used from a Land Rover Main Dealer.
Your nearest dealer in Edinburgh is Pentland but you can search on the Land Rover website for nearby dealers by entering the first part of you post code. Thanks for the reply Tim,

I've been offered a 4.2 SC in Silver, 09/05 for 37k with lowish miles which seems pretty good!

Is the 2.7 significantly slower?

My mpg here :-

Split opinion on the board. The derv boys would rather pay £10k more for a TDv8. I'd rather pay £10k less, have better performance all the toys and buy petrol (that is now 5p per litre cheaper than diesel).

Each to their own....

I love my SC....

Fuel cost comparison :-

So - at 8000 miles per annum, you'll spend £1k more than the TDv6....

Of course, come resale, your car will depreciate faster than a diesel. But buying it second hand... Some of that has be dealt with.... 2022 P440e AB

In the UK the SC is dead - too greedy on fuel and the TDV8 is a match on power. LR are offering £3k off the list on SC at the moment. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

Thats a discount for sure. But you'd be mad to buy new anyway.
To say that the SC is dead, is like saying the Porsche won't sell any Cayenne's, and they will..... 2022 P440e AB

Where? Not Cat ABCD insurance etc?
I want to buy it. Seriously.

Anyone remember the SC that sold on ebay a few months ago that had been hit by a truck? Should have been written off. It went for £17k. £23k for one that works, bargain.

Ford mondeo or fully loaded SC....Hmm. no brainer. Bond can keep the Mondeo. 2022 P440e AB

My local dealer has had a FFRR Vogue SE S/C sitting on their forecourt for 15 months............................. the price hasn't dropped from £45k in the last 7 months but I'm sure if you offered them £25k for it they would be delighted to be shot of it. I think it has stuck because of the colour - Tonga Green with Black interior and it is also one of the last of the pre-facelift cars so doesn't have TR and the interior upgrades that came with it. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Funny thing is I was told in the trade that they are difficult to sell and the dealer was well upset when I spoke to him. Knocked 3k off without any real trying.

Funny enough you mention the Cayenne - nice car I've also considered but the RRS is the looker for sure between the two.

15mpg average I can live with as that's what my R32 is on today!

So how much should I pay for a SC, 06 with toys in a decent colour?

I'd say about £35k would be reasonable.
