doubts about RRS TDV8...

Hello! I am just in the process of buying my first RRS TDV8 but I have some doubts about it. Because I was driving now for more than 10 years BMWs I wanted to buy first an X5 but that car lacks something which RRS has-it has charm.
My main concern is the quality of the car because my BMWs were working perfectly and I heard a lot of stories that the quality of LR (RRS) is not ok and that a lot of owners have problems.
The second problem is that I do not know how safe that car is because there are no crash tests done.......is the RRS built on the platform of Discovery3?

Thank you for the answers, Markos

BMW's are comparatively simple compared to the RRS. It would be wrong to state that RRS's do not have faults but many of the niggly faults have already been put right by Land Rover. For example the engine fault on my TDV8 was finally solved by a software update which is now being incorporated into all MY8.5 models. It has taken a few trips to my dealer but has never broken down and I have always been given an equivalent loan car.

Yes the RRS has not been crash tested by NCAP but it is based on the front end and platform of the discovery so you can safely assume it meets the same rating of 4 stars.

Hope this helps as you will always regret it if you go for the X5 instead. I am not alone in coming from a 911 to the RRS and I enjoy driving my TDV8 far more than the 911. Gone - 2008 TDV8, Stornoway Grey, ebony, zabrano trim, TV, Tasmods, mudflaps.

Hello Markos and welcome to the forum.

You are correct, the RRS is built on the same platform as the Discovery 3. In fact they are built on the same production line. Thumbs Up

If you search through some of the threads on this forum you will find a few horror stories. From owners who have had bad experiences with their vehicles. This isn't always down to the vehicle though, some of the problems have been due to the poor customer support shown by some Land Rover dealerships.

On the other hand, you will also read a lot of posts from owners who simply love their RRS. There are a few owners on here who are on their second or third vehicle. They love the product so much they have upgraded their vehicles each year since it's original launch.

We have to speak as we find and I can honestly say that after almost two years of ownership and twenty five thousand miles I have not had any major problems with my Range Rover Sport. Arctic Frost TDV6 SE. Aspen Leather, Cherry Wood, Privacy Glass, PTI, Tow Pack, Mudflaps, Tasmods, a new Fuelflap, a RRSport.co.uk umbrella in the boot & a RRSport.co.uk sticker on the rear glass.

Thank you all for the answers. Can anybody tell me if it is possible to find from the car serial number if the model is 2008 or 2008.5?

Tricky one this. TB would be your best bet regarding the serial number. A good indication is the new for MY8.5 TDV8 badge on the back and the electic adjustment of the steering column. Gone - 2008 TDV8, Stornoway Grey, ebony, zabrano trim, TV, Tasmods, mudflaps.

I don't think there is any difference in the VIN between 08 and 08.5 my's.

The TDV8 badge is the easiest give away, but some unscrupulous 08my owners have started sticking the nice shiney badge onto the back of their vehicles too.

Regarding the TDV8 badge I am not sure if that is correct because my local LR dealer told me that you can choose the badge TDV8 or HSE..... that is what he told me

No not yet - the car is too dirty and it has been a tad chilly out for car washing, and today I have been green-roading but not in the Sport. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Well i picked up my brand spanker TDV8 yesterday and completely amazed by it!
It's a beast, and really quite rapid for such a thing... says a lot coming from a TVR T350 owner! just looking forward to clocking up some miles. Dealer didn't give me the choice about which badge I wanted on the back but happy with the TDV8 one cause it's deffo a n 08.5MY

Hi Markos
All I have to add is that like you I have driven BMW's for many years. We were also looking at the X5 this time last year but from inside it was virtually a larger version of my 3 series which is my day car. I wanted something different for my weekend driving. One year on I am still everybit as in love with the RRS as I was on day one. I have had no real problems (a little grease to the front suspension).
I cant vouch for the TDV8 other than to say I would love one.

The thing is also that you will find more unhappy people on forums then happy one's.

People tend to come to forum to complain about stuff, rarely to say that they are happy with their purchase, so don't use that as a reference; and you'll find this behaviour on all kinds of products. 08.5 RRS TDV6 HSE Java Black/Alpaga - Cold Climate Pack - Privacy Glass - Bluetooth - Sunroof - 20" wheels - Rubber Floor mats.
