United Kingdom 2005 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Rimini Red
TDv8 v S/C back to back & head to head

A pal of mine has bought a S/C so this afternoon we tried a bit of "Back to Back & Head to Head".

And the offical, unanimous and clear outcome of this exercise is ......

... that the TDv8 wins !!!!

The TDv8 (which BTW has been chipped) delivers a remarkably similar driving experience to the S/C in most situations. However, the noise of the S/C is quite enthralling, but after a while that sound starts to feel like its only being generated by inefficently burning lots of petrol without necessarily generating any more go than the TDv8. In the TDv8 the engine noise rises in direct proportion to the power being put down on the road, without any lag or excess. The mid range (60 - 90) on the TDv8 is noticeably more satisfying, with a tsunami like wave of torque sweeping you along. Attempt the same in the S/C and the size and power of the "wave" is somewhat lower (more Newquay than Hawaii).

And if you were left in any doubt, press the MPG button and see 12.8mpg in the S/C and 24.2 mpg in the TDv8. After an hour of intensive road testing, the S/C's fuel gauge had fallen by a rather noticeable and alarming amount, whilst the TDv8's hadn't appeared to have moved at all. And I guess the depreciation of the S/C in that hour was also about double that of the TDv8.

My pal is now reassessing whether he did the right thing in buying the S/C - whilst I know beyond all doubt that I did the right thing getting the TDv8.

2013 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Stornoway Grey

Judging by the number of S/C RRS and FFRR's at the LR Senior Management Meeting at Gaydon last Monday there will shortly be a heap of low miles, fully loaded cars coming into dealers in the next couple of months, which will push values down even further. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Gavin, to be fair, that's the cheapest by some way with nearly 60k miles.
But, the point is true.

My SC costs £800 a year extra to run over the TDv6 (assuming 7000 miles).

7,000 miles at 12 mpg and £5 a gallon = £2,900

7,000 miles at 24 mpg and £5 a gallon = £1,450

Difference £1,450 ?

Or is your s/c doing 17.5 mpg ?

Anyway, cost aside, I simply prefer torque over BHP. Torque feels better to me in most real life situations. I aint a boy racer, I just like to be able to turn a big tap on to overtake or cruise so effortlessly at highish speeds. Other considerations are time spent refueling (and limited range) and (whisper it) a niggling sense of guilt at low mpg (only niggling mind, not serious enuff to but a bus pass or anything Shocked ).

Each to their own, I hope you are very very happy in your S/C Razz RRS TDv8 HSE Rimini

I think you're right Smarticus, the TDV8 is a nicer car all round. The only areas it will loose out is noise and from the lights. The TD is eaiser to drive with that torque and miles better offroad, with much greater range to boot. But I guess not many SC are driven offroad.

Pelyma, I bet not too many TDv8's are driven off-road either!
I am quite happy to forsake 1sec of 0-62mph and a little bit of exhaust rortiness to have miles better mpg and better residuals when it comes to sell. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

My SC is doing 15 miles to the gallon.

My comparison is based upon the tdv6 and the fact that petrol is cheaper than diesel....

Kaine - you are spot on. Not really a matter of opinion, more of fact IMHO.

What matters to some though, is that the SC is a bargain to buy second hand. Much cheaper than the TDv8. I reckon though that the total cost of ownership will be the similar.

I.E. A more expensive TDv8 will depreciate less, cost less to run but more to buy.
An SC is cheaper to buy (an equivalent second hand car), will depreciate faster and costs more to run.

In the long term, and i'm keeping mine for 5 years, i reckon my RRS will be worth £15k. A five year old TDv8, well that might be worth £3k more. 2022 P440e AB
