LPG Injection - TDV6

I just had a very interesting discussion with (what I think as) a very good non-LR LR service guy in Canberra. He is now putting LPG injection kits into Disco3s and RRSs and has had some very good results.

For $3800 south pacific pesos ($AUD) the kit consists of an around 20lt LPG tank mounted underneath on the chassis and separate ECU to control the LPG injection into the manifold.

Results are
Range is up from 700-800km to 1100km
Power is up - apparently similar to chipping
Oil contamination is way down with the engine oil staying a brown colour more like a petrol engine instead of black.

The LPG ensures a much more efficient burn of the diesel.

Also, this conversion qualifies for a rebate of $2000AUD from our Federal Government as they are trying to encourage LPG conversions.

Also, if the LPG tank runs out, engine is back to normal.

Has anyone here heard anything else on this type of thing?

I've never heard of diesel engines running on LPG! It doesn't sound technically possible to me but Nutty Nigel over hear in the UK will be the person to comment with better authority. I'm sure he will be along as soon as the rest of the UK wakes up this morning. Gone - 2008 TDV8, Stornoway Grey, ebony, zabrano trim, TV, Tasmods, mudflaps.

Sorry rrsjo, I have been busy. You can fit it to Diesel but you are mixing the 2 fuels together to get better combustion quality, You normally get between 75-87% efficiency from any diesel but if you also inject LPG you get nearly 96-98% efficiency. Normally the fuel saving is only about 20-35% so you need to weigh up is it worth it. You can get more torque and fuel economy than standard from an up-grade so I would not bother. Just re-map. If you talk to the USA or Australians that are using it they will go into a great detail about fuel saving by turning off the injectors when you are slowing down on the overun, this has been the case on all petrol cars for 25 years and all Diesels in Europe and UK for about 11 years. If you inject fuel on the overun you get a very slight surge on the car when slowing down. Go down a street tonight in your RRS where you have enclosed sides-high buildings holding in the noise- or a bridge. Open the drivers and passenger window, When you let go of the throttle listen to the engine note as the RPM clock comes back down past 1500-1200rpm, you will hear the Diesel knock come back on as the fuel starts going back through the injectors into the engine. So there is no fuel saving there. Personally I would not bother the saving is not enough. When you are filling up a FFRR 4.4 with £30 of LPG instead of £90 of petrol it is worth it. You don't stop playing because you get old, You get old because you stop playing.

There is a D1 that races and is an LPG diesel for the extra power. As I understood it, it is rather technical and what a D3/RRS would make of it I don't know. Have a go and let us know!

Its not the economy you do it for, its the power

Done a teeny weeny bit of digging. Apparently if you 'detune' you cars engine management by having a 'remap' to reduce the power and then add LPG it will give you back the power you have lost plus an increase in economy of 20%.....sounds the way to go but not sure LR would agree Sad

To be honest the power and torque increase is the design as pelyma pointed out, but the fuel saving is not that good.
In our colder climate and heavy traffic probs- you may only save 10-15% on fuel is my guess. You don't stop playing because you get old, You get old because you stop playing.
