Anybody using diesel additive? I just bought some that is supposed to reduce smoke, clean injectors, increase the cetane rating of the diesel fule and therefore give you a 10% power increase......all at $20 for a litre bottle. Only need to add about 150ml a tank. RRS TDV6 Bluetooth, VR, Roof

IMHO I'd be cautious about using any additive, I don't think modern diesels need it. You may do more harm than good. TDV6 - gone

The Truckers in america have used Automatic transmission fluid (ATF) for years as a combustion improver and injector cleaner. It also dissolves completely and doesnt gel at low temperatures.
The only problem is it's RED. your local dealer will get the impression that you have been using REd diesel (very naughty).

One other good one is EP90 gear oil (1/4 litre in 20 gallons).
The sulphur in the ep90 protects your pump and it smokes less.
I've tried this succesfully in a 300tdi discovery , it ran much better.

I will try the two stroke oil in the tank , at such small dilutions it cant do any harm.

The problem with out TDV6 engines is the injectors.
These special piezo high pressure injectors we have must use VERY clean fuel .
If we add oil in high concentrations then you might potentially clog the filter .

The safest thing to do is to stick to good pump fuel (esso/BP/Shell et al) and avoid supermarket derv.

My brother in law has his own repair garage. He recons most of the rough running / driveability problems he sees are all down to using poor quality supermarket fuel.
I've been using this Shell V power diesel , pricey but goes well.

Keep pouring it in!

Well said Big Mart. You beat me to it.
The ATF in the trucks in USA is Dexron 2 because it has a detergent in it that will clean out the nozzles under pressure.
We used to drain the sump on the Rover cars with hydraulic cam followerss and fill it with the ATF and drive on it for 25 miles then flush it out and back to normal oil- for the misfire and losing power when the valves were sticking if it was sludge in the hydraulic cam followers, it would flush it out.
But just be careful with those injectors as you said they are critical and if it goes wrong it is new only, and they are silly money.  You don't stop playing because you get old, You get old because you stop playing.

For the TDV8 it is on Page 165 of the Owners Handbook under 'Fuel and refuelling'.

This same conversation is happening right now on other car forums. Manufacturers in general are moving away from allowing additives.
I know the master tech at my local Volvo dealership, for years they have been using Forte additives every day and getting very good results.
Volvo have now banned them from using any fuel additives in their D5 engines even though as I say they have been doing it for years with only positive results.
Does make you wonder if it is a double bluff and manufacturers are planning on making a killing with replacement injectors / pumps in years to come

But then how many instances of failed injectors etc are there because of the lack of use of additives? Isn't it all a bit of a non-issue especially in this day and age when generally people don't keep their cars for years on end.

Maybe I'm just showing what a luddite I am when it comes to mechanicals....

True Shmoogle, probably me just being sceptical about manufacturers and main dealers after a very expensive trip to a Vauxhall dealership with my van yesterday

This probably was more of an issue with older diesels, I have certainly seen first hand the difference one bottle of Forte fuel cleaner can make on an old sickly diesel.

May I suggest spending a few more pennies (sore subject I know ) at the pump by filling up with BP Ultimate diesel or the Shell version if you can find it. They've got the additives built into the fuel......so clean injectors. Can't breach the warranty by using good fuel.  TDV6 - gone
