Event Data Recording - The LR Black Box is watching you!

According to the manual for MY08 (p32), the RRS is equipped with an "event data recorder". It seems to be a black box capable of recording speed, position of accelerator pedal, seat belt positions etc in crash situations. It would seem that the Police could obtain an order to get access to the data. Now I'm not saying that I drive dangerously or ever occasionally edge over the speed limit Whistle but I am not entirely happy about the idea of this kind of data being logged & wondered if anyone shares this view - or if anyone knows how to disable the EDR system?

The 'Event Data Recorder' has been fitted (certainly in the UK) since the RRS was introduced.

To find this out I just went on LR's website and looked at each year's owner handbook. More or less the same wording is in each including the 2005MY. It states steering wheel position, throttle position, speed etc are all being monitored and in the event of a crash the last 30 seconds of information can be assessed. It is on a different page numbers but you will find the details somewhere near the beginning - probably under 'general information' or something like that.

From 2008MY Owners Handbook:-

"Event data recording
This vehicle is equipped with an Event Data
Recorder (EDR). The main purpose of an EDR
is to record, in certain crash or near crash-like
situations, such as an air bag deployment or
hitting a road obstacle, data that will assist in
understanding how a vehicle's systems
performed. The EDR is designed to record data
related to vehicle dynamics and safety systems
for a short period of time, typically 30 seconds
or less. The EDR in this vehicle is designed to
record such data as:
• How various systems in your vehicle were
operating;
• Whether or not the driver and passenger
safety belts were buckled/fastened;
• How far (if at all) the driver was depressing
the accelerator and/or brake pedal; and,
• How fast the vehicle was traveling.
These data can help provide a better
understanding of the circumstances in which
crashes and injuries occur.
Note: EDR data are recorded by your vehicle
only if a non-trivial crash situation occurs; no
data are recorded by the EDR under normal
driving conditions and no personal data (e.g.,
name, gender, age, and crash location) are
recorded. However, other parties, such as law
enforcement, could combine the EDR data with
the type of personally identifying data routinely
acquired during a crash investigation.
To read data recorded by an EDR, special
equipment is required, and access to the
vehicle or the EDR is needed. In addition to the
vehicle manufacturer, other parties, such as
law enforcement, that have the special
equipment, can read the information if they
have access to the vehicle or the EDR.
Land Rover do not access event data recorder
information without obtaining consent, unless
pursuant to court order or where required by
law enforcement, other government authorities
or third parties acting with lawful authority.
Other parties may seek to access the
information independently of Land Rover.
DISABILITY MODIFICATIONS
Occupants with disabilities which may require
modification of the vehicle must contact a Land
Rover Dealer/Authorised Repairer before any
modifications are made."

Other year Handbooks appear to indicate even more 'systms' are monitored - such as the steering wheel position.

Big brother is watching us. I wonder if other vehicles have this equipment fitted. Land Rover would do better to put more resources into sorting the Dynamic Response than on this 'black box' stuff.

I'm just off to pick my first 'black box' (and RRS) up from the dealers this morning.

It has been standard on most american cars for at least the past 10 years
I can remember grumblings from US drivers of the Landcruiser back then about what was being recorded and how law enforcement officers could access it Sons of dogs come hither and get flesh

I'm glad I'm not the only one who is a tad Censored off about the idea. Any ideas how to switch it off without using wire cutters (if I could find its location that is!)?

Don't think the information could be used without your permission. Careful anyone with their RRS's on Hire Purchase as the finance company owns it!

I think it would be a brave court in the UK to use it as evidence, due to the information being from an untrusted source. They would need Land Rover to warrant that the information is 100% accurate with no margin for error which I would be very suprised if they would (as they have nothing to gain from it).

I'd guess it's there for the yanks. TDV8 HSE in Java/Ebony with Zebrano Wood, RSE, Hybrid TV, and a few other bells and whistles.

Obviously got something to hide if you're worried about it.

About disabling it, not a chance!!!

You could pull the SRS fuse as the data is stored in the SRS DCU, SRS light will be on all the time and may cause other systems to malfunction as all ECU's need to talk to each other all the time.

The main idea behind it is not to see if you were breaking the speed limit when you crashed (although this can be found out), but if an air bag doesn't deploy and someone is killed or seriously injured as a result, then you can go in and find out if certain criteia were met (i.e, were the seatbelts being worn?) and if the air bag was supposed to deploy. Stuff like that.

If your wife/husband/brother etc. were killed in an accident because an airbag didn't deploy, wouldn't you want to know why? Damn sure you would.

This system has been around for years and is fitted to loads of cars. I no longer work for Stratstone land rover cardiff. Thank f**K!!!

It started when the MOT emissions came in. The plods were going to be given Gas meters, OBD diagnostic kit and all sorts of gear to prosecute on the spot for high exhaust emissions. Then it got more intense and we have to follow the USA (as is the norm). As clutchdust says the ECU,s all talk on the Can Bus system constatly transmitting data so you can't disconnect it. The type of system has been used now for about 5 years and is in loads of cars. As for actually using it the legislation is not yet fully complete is what we have been told but there is no way around it.

As Clutchdust said if there were to be an accident and your relative was killed - You would know the angle of steering wheel, Brake distribution, Vehicle speed, Angle of vehicle, Should the air bag have deployed, Actual gear selected, Throttle angle, Seat belt pre-tension, the list just goes on.

What you have to remember is it was put there for helping accident investigation more than trying to catch anyone out. Neutral You don't stop playing because you get old, You get old because you stop playing.
