Stormers are off again Sad

We took off the Stormers tonight just to play it safe & found that they were rubbing slightly on the upright.

So that was certainly the best decision.

We’re going to look for 275’s in either 45 or 40 profile tomorrow to see what’s available. Although I think I should just go for the 40’s & be done with it, rather than 45’s even though they’d give more a bit more comfort.

In answer to your question rrsjo my Stormers are indeed LR OE accessory rims, part no: RRC503820MCM as listed on page eight of the accessory catalogue, bought through my local LR dealer.

Oh I’m tiring of all this, it was a big decision for me to go for the rims & unfortunately it’s not working out too good & all the good is being taken out of it for me. I’ve a good mind just to post them in the “For Sale” section & let them off. But I guess after all the effort & expense getting them I should battle it out a bit more.

Listen guys………. thanks for all your help, views & advice. I really appreciate you all sticking with me on this one & it’s always heartening to see a new post pretty much each time I check this thread Thumbs Up

Hopefully this will turn out ok in the end & “Rupert” will get to wear his new rims in the not too distant future Confused

Rupert, if you use this http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html to work out the difference between the 295 X 45 tyres you had on and the 295 x 40 tyres Envoy has, there appears to only be an additional 7mm clearance on top of the 2 mm your photo shows. This is no where near the 25mm + clearance that Envoy reports having. This points to a difference in the off set between the two wheels! In theory the LR ones should be correct. However, the evidence points to the fact that they are not. Even with 275 x 40 tyres fitted you will only obtain 13 mm clearance - again no where near the clearance Envoy is reporting with the wider 295 x 40 tyres.

Perhaps someone else could have a look under their car if it is fitted with either the 20" 10 spoke or the 20" Stormer wheels and post on here if the clearance is indeed only about 13 mm or if it is more like the 25 - 30 mm that Envoy's car would suggest. Idea

Yes indeed it would be great if someone else who has fitted Stormers to their TDV6 could check the clearances.

There are surely a good few who have done this before, hopefully they’ll spot this thread & post, or if anyone knows of another member with this setup. Perhaps they ask them to report. It would be very interesting to learn of the clearances involved on the standard brake setup with the 275 40’s.

The 13mm clearance you’ve worked out rrsjo would certainly get me out of the woods & while nowhere near the clearances that ENVOY could simply down to the Brembo Brakes.

But at least I’d be able to run my Stormers.

It’s also concerning to think that there may be others with such little clearance unaware of the situation. As I said in a post last night, my tyres showed evidence of slight rubbing………….& any rubbing at all or even the risk of it, is too dangerous to drive with.

So perhaps there’s a warning here for all Exclamation

I said almost 4 pages ago I didn't think it was right.... Whistle Rolling Eyes

It would be a shame for you to drop them Rupert, imho Stormers finish the RRS perfectly so please persevere with this.

Come on 20s ownership, how much clearance do your tyres give you on your particular tyre choice? This is almost worth another thread as a straw poll...

Update……The saga has ended Thumbs Up

Well finally I have the Stormer issue on “Rupert” resolved & he’s now proudly wearing his new wheels Cool

We mounted the 275/40’s on the rims & now have loads of clearance, as you can see below.

Compared to the Pirelli 295/45’s that we originally put on Shocked

I would strongly advise anyone running 295/45’s on genuine LR Stormer alloys to check their clearances, as mine were most definitely rubbing the suspension upright.

I worry that there might be RRS owners out there with their tyres rubbing, which is a very dangerous situation Shocked

Clearance with the 275/40's

Have a look in my gallery for a few more pics of the tyre clearance issue.

Still doesn't seem to be a huge amount of clearance, but never having looked I don't know if this is normal or not Wink Glad you got to the end Rupert Thumbs Up

Well you'd slip a finger in the clearance..............if you pardon the expression Whistle

Compared to the non-existent clearance with the 295/45’s it’s a veritable grand canyon !

I asked the guys at my dealer to see if there was any reason why the Stormers may not have suited my particular RRS & they found no difference in the suspension set ups between models. Nor did they find any LR documentation stating that the Stormers listed on the accessories catalogue were not suited to any model.

So all that taken into account & that my wheels are genuine LR alloys, fitted with Conti Contact Sport 4x4’s 275/40’s as fitted in the factory, I reckon I stand the best chance of the set up being right.

Thanks to everyone who has helped & offered their opinions in this thread.

I would also like to reiterate that I think it would be a very good idea for those running the 295/45 option on their Stormers, either OEM or replica to check the clearances.

I just need to wait to have "Rupert" washed & get a nice sunny day, so I post some pics, of my new improved Sport Cool

UPDATE

Last Update on the Stormer Saga.

The Stormers have been on now for a few weeks & I wanted to post a pic of Rupert with his new wheels.

But the weather has been awful & it took until last Friday before I got a chance to wash Rupert & do a "shoot"

Results are in my gallery for those who may be interested.

Here's a sample, that I thought I'd share.................

Looking good Rupert - glad you've got a happy ending. Thumbs Up Like E says though - I'm a bit confused over why you have so little clearance with them, they are so commonly fitted I can't imagine it not being raised as an issue before now. Anyway, you're happy which is the main thing Very Happy

Cheers for the compliments guys Cool

With regard to the clearance issues, I spotted a D3 with Stormers on the other day & had a closer look, to find he was running 295 45’s. I was temped to get in underneath to look at the clearances, but thought better of it. This was on a busy street after all.

But what I did notice straight away was that the offset of the rim was greater than my rims. You could clearly see an increased outward crank on the spokes as they came off the centre hub area of the rim. So perhaps they were third party copies, rather than genuine LR rims, like mine are.

So I wonder is that perhaps the answer ??

"E" I hope you don’t mind my asking, but are your alloys LR or third party ??

I seem to remember that there is a problem with the D3 when fitted with the RRS 19 inch wheels with Goodyear MTR's fitted. From what I remember there are instances of rubbing with these but i doesn't happen with the RRS, because of that I would conclude the RRS has more clearance. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten
