Can you run the fuel tank completely dry?

There is an interesting thread on Freel2 regarding the ecu's ability to go into limp home mode when you are running low on fuel. There is a response from somebody who I assume works for LR (Insider) which explains the system. I wonder if the other LR models have the same function. http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic519.html 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

I was told by my dealer that the RRS will go in to a limp home mode if you get down to 0 on the computer apparently there is still a couple of gallons in the tank to save damage to the fuel delivery pump some of my Previous cars

Most manufacturers have done this for a while now. Its normally only on common rail high pressure Diesel
To stop damage to the high pressure pump (because the fuel is the lubrication source) the engine control ECU monitors the fuel level in the tank. I think Citroen were first. The engine should not start when it gets below the quantity that signals the Zero content. You don't stop playing because you get old, You get old because you stop playing.

Playing the 0 on the trip computer range is frankly a stupid game to play in a high pressure common rail diesel engine.

We all know that if you push it that bit too far you will run out of fuel and then the bills come flooding in.

I have previously posted on this. http://www.rrsport.co.uk/forum/topic6312.html?highlight=
Not big or clever I know but I did drive nearly 9 miles beyond zero and then the engine cut out as I rolled into the station. There were no adverse effects and the car did not go into limp home mode. (Although it has been known to do that with plenty of fuel in the tank!)

Range is based on average fuel use so by slowing down and getting better MPG you can go beyond the original zero limit

posted this once before, but on the way back from Merc World day with rrsport, I managed to get down to 0 miles left in the tank (not intentional at all). A fuel stop I knew was on the way home had closed as it had run out of fuel - this combined with the fact we got stuck in a huge traffic jam meant I was sitting watching the indicator slowly tick down from 10 miles to go - at about 0 miles indicated I turned the engine off as we were still in the queue and was desperately searching fuel stations on the SatNav - basically decided to call for someone to bring me fuel - however when I started the engine again I suddenly had over 20 miles remaining - carried on and found a petrol station and all was fine.

It seems like the indicator was playing safe - which was bloody helpful on that day

Well that is the worrying bit Kaine
My advice would be DO NOT let it go to 0
The reason being if you plug the Diagnostic kit into the car the fuel gauge, trip meter and control module all give slightly different readings - So which one is right. One of us will have a shock one day.- 10 miles on the trip and stuck on the side of the road Surprised You don't stop playing because you get old, You get old because you stop playing.

tbh I dont trust the RRS computer anyway - the SatNav eta times are always wrong and doesn't seem to take into account the fact that slower roads are on route which will bring my average speed down plus the mileage remaining goes down quicker towards the end of the tank

it wont do it any harm to "run it out". It will never run out, there is always 10 litres of fuel in there to keep the system wet, ECU goes into "run out of fuel strategy" which means it will turn off injectors to give a surge and a missfire then stop, you will then need to put in at least 10 litres to get it running again.

So what you're saying is that if the system detects less than 10 litres of fuel, then it shuts itself down - the end result being that the car stops itself from running dry? Confused
