Back again, with another question………..

Over the weekend I found that I can get a great deal on a set of Continental 295 45 20’s.

How would the 45’s work out instead of the 40’s that would normally go on the Stormers ??

I don’t think there should be much difference in the rolling radius & if anything they would offer a bit more protection / comfort than the 40’s, but I wonder would there be any other “hidden” problems.

Has anyone experience of running 45’s instead of the 40’s on their Stormers ???

I've got an idea the 295/45 profile is actually the standard alternative to the usual 275s... so, should be plenty of happy users out there.

Ah !

I was wondering why most of the quotes were coming back with 45’s instead of the 40’s.

There are 295 40’s out there, but jeez the quotes that were coming in for them were ferocious compared to the 45’s Shocked

Just to re-visit this thread once more, as I’ll soon be shoeing “Rupert” with his new rims.

With the 20” Stormers what sort of change will there be in the rolling radius & how will it affect the gearing & speedo readings ???

Bearing in mind that I’ve opted for the larger 295 45 20 tyre that seems to be the preference on here, with those who’ve retro fitted the Stormers, so it’s going to be slightly higher than the 40’s fitted by LR on the SC Sports.

Your speedo will be about 6.3% too slow compared to the stock 275/40/20s, your mpg average will suck - but only on paper - and your odometer will equally record about 6.3 miles less for each 100 you actually drive, not necessarily a bad thing when resale time comes around. Laughing (I am not that smart by the way, you can easily do your own comparisons using tyre calculators such as this one: http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html ) Other than that - and perhaps a tad less road feel and precise handling due to the taller sidewall - you shouldn't have any problems: You should be well within the overall dimensions where potential rubbing may occur in certain conditions. The satnav has its own speed sensors / dead reckoning technology and will adjust to the new donuts in no time.

I have 295x40x20's on Stormers and they are the business, slightly deeper side walls than my old 275x40x20's and being slightly wider as well, they give more protection against curb damage and a better ride,IMHO Thumbs Up some of my Previous cars

I was hoping to get the 295 40’s like ENVOY but in the end the 45’s came in “way” cheaper, so that combined with seeing that many on here recommended the 45’s over the 40’s that’s what I went for.

I measured the tyre / rim combined height last night on the new set up & it came in a 30 ½ inches, compared to roughly 27 ¾ inches for the 18’s that are currently on “Rupert”

So that’s a difference of 2 ¾ inches on the overall height, so when divided by 2 to get the RR difference, it works out a touch under 1 ½ inches height difference over what’s currently on.

So by the time nearly four tonne of RR Sport is settled on the new rims, it would seem that there’s not going to be the huge difference I originally thought.

I saw two of my rims with the tyres mounted last night & got quite a shock when I saw the overall height, hence the post late last night.

I had a choice of Conti’s or Pirelli “Scorpion Zero’s” & have gone for the Pirelli. While I’ve always been a Pirelli man, so that would have helped sway the decision in any case, the Pirelli did look a tougher tyre than the Conti.

Although the Conti was a bit flatter, which may have been better for the Rolling Radius, the Pirelli looking like it had slightly more sidewall. So that can only go to help prevent a case of kerb rash.

Anyway, the tyres are being mounted on the other two rims today & all four Stormers will be going under “Rupert” tonight. Hopefully it will all be okay & the 20’s will get on ok with the Irish Roads.

Thanks for all your help & advice guys. Thumbs Up

Have you not thought of having the speedo recalibrated. I know on Jaguars this is easily done at the dealers by just plugging in and specifing the tyre size - I would have thought the same would apply to the RRS. After all, the factory must do the same when the different wheel sizes are fitted when the vehicle is built.

Had the Stormers fitted to “Rupert” tonight & they look amazing.
(pix will be posted in time)

My only concern is that that front tyres are very close to an arm in the suspension set up. They’re not rubbing, but you’d only slip a credit card in the gap between the tyre & the arm.

I’m going to monitor them after a days driving tomorrow & if there’s any sign of rubbing at all I’m going to change the tyres to the factory fit spec of 275’s instead of the 295’s I have on.

The guy I get my tyres from is a good mate so there’s no issue with changing after a day or so driving Thumbs Up

I do like the feel of the tyres on the road, as I feel the 45 profile offers good comfort, in fact I’d go so far as to say there’s little or no difference in ride quality from the 55 profile 18’s that were on “Rupert”

But if they are not right, then I won’t risk it.

I was just wondering if any of you out there who are running the 295’s have any issues with rubbing ??

Any idea how close they are to any components of the front suspension up at the top ??

Mine are not rubbing, but by Ginny they are close Shocked

Edited to add: Am I correct in saying you’re running 40’s rather than 45’s Envoy ?

OT, but related... I had a set of offorad tires fitted to my RRS and they were damn close to rubbing on the upper spindle, right at the knuckle. I decided to pass, since the clearance was SO close. If you guys have ok luck with an extremely tight tolerance there, I may have to reconsider. Keep us posted.
