Headlights and tyre pressure monitor.

Hello
I'm new to this forum and have a couple of question which I hope you knowledgeable chaps will be able to answer.
I have just bought a new (March 08 reg) RRS 4.4 HSE petrol. It is LHD, I will be relocating to Montenegro in about 6 months.
It was an unusual deal ie. it was sold to me by a very small dealership in Northampton, it is brand new and perfect but was offered with no warranty from the dealer or LR, apparently it sustained some small damage (scratch or something) in transit to its intended country, was returned LR where it was repaired but could not thereafter be sold as a new car.
It has quite a few extras, has only 60 miles on the clock and I am very happy with it.
I paid £40,000 for it and although I would have preferred a diesel engine I felt that the saving I made in the cost price would pay for a lot of petrol and hopefully nothing serious would go wrong during the normal warranty period.
The sat/nav was set on Belgium when I picked it up so probably that was where it was going. The dealer got me copies of English manuals and disposed of the manual that came with the car. The problem is that the manual describes some things which I don't have and doesn't describe some things I do have.
Here are my questions -
The manual and this forum have described how to change the headlights to work with lhd and rhd but although I have taken the lights off twice and scrutinised the inside I cannot find a lever to move. Is anyone aware that the lever is not included for some markets?
The car has bi-xenons and the dealers advert described them as adaptive but I can't see them doing anything that normal headlights don't do. If I park in front of a wall with the headlights on and turn the steering wheel from side to side, should I see movement in the lit area?
Montenegro is a country which require lights to be on all the time, this function is described in the manual as something which can be done by a dealer, does anyone know how I can do it myself - headlights but no panel lights?
The dealers advert also said that the tyre pressure is automatically monitored, I'm not sure now that I really have this function, how can I tell?
Thank for your help
Geoff

Welcome to the forums geoff, lets see what I can do top help:

Adaptive headlights - it isn't the actual headlight that moves, if you switch on the lights and start the engine then turn the steering wheel to full lock you should see another "beam" showing on that side, turn the wheel the other way and near to full lock the other side should light up. The extra beam is an additional lamp in the sidelight section not an extra headlamp. When you are driving and activate the indicators then at low speed the Adaptives will also switch on on the side you indicate to turn to.

The TPMS IIRC has different valve stems/caps to normal (they contain a short range RF transmitter or something)- I only know of one owner on here with the system and that is Alicat, who should be able to help you. He also has a left hand drive RRS that flits between Belgium and Scotland a lot so he might be able to help on the daylight running lights and the headlamp adjusters.

The forums also has a large dealership as the sponsors Charles Hurst Park Royal Land Rover, if you look for one of Jame's posts there are contact details there and their guys in Accessories should be able to help you, or PM James direct with the info you need. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Thanks Tim. When I turn the steering wheel from full lock to full lock I can't see anything changing in the light pattern so I suppose my lights are not adaptive, contrary to the dealers ad.

I may be wrong here but aren't adaptive headlights different to what you are talking about Tim?

All RRS's have the little side lights that come on with the indicators below a certain speed (20 - 30mph-ish) , but these aren't adaptive. Adaptive headlights should have an element of 'Swivel' which adapts to the turn of the wheel to highlight different parts of the road.

Not sure re levers in headlights. I have changed our RHD Sport for driving in mainland Europe and if you take the lights off the car and unscrew the cap on the back and look inside, the lever is pretty self evident. Runner up - 2009 Best Avatar Award Sad

I have adaptives on mine and there is a second lamp in the side light cowl that comes on when I turn the wheel that I never had on the SE, but I have never noticed my headlamps moving to look round bends!. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

The adaptives are not too obvious in use. The best way to see them operate is to set the lights to automatic, then switch the vehicle on in a dark place. You will then see the headlight beams do a little dance in front of you. Some people swear that the adaptives are great value and significantly enhance saftey etc. Personally I don't quite get it, despite my journey home in the dark each day including several miles of narrow, twisty, unlit country lanes.

Sat Nav set to Belgium seems to be a default setting so that doesn't offer a clue of where the vehicle was heading. I cannot understand why the vehicle would be without a warranty ? All LR product comes with a 3 year warranty (maybe a shorter period in some markets) which should stay with the vehicle regardless of change in ownership. So why on earth would Land Rover deny this vehicle a warranty period. Mighty suspicious about that. I suggest you take the vehicle to a local LR main dealer and ask them to tell you the vehicles "story" and warranty status. They should be able to do so from putting its VIN into their computer system.

That dealer will also be able to advise on the Headlight on Permanently setting, but I guess you won't want that enabled until you are abroad.

The tyre pressure monitoring sensors are an optional extra and they are built into the valve stem on the wheel. If your stem looks normal then you aint got the tyre pressure sensors fitted. Dont worry if you haven't, its a feature many can happily live without.

And by the way (sorry to sound pessimistic), the 4.4 petrol depreciates like a Bear Sterns share certificate, so hopefully you will enjoy her and want to keep her a long time. RRS TDv8 HSE Rimini

So what are the extra lamps in the side light cowls then S? I find them really useful in carparks and narrow twisty lanes at night, but if they aren't the adaptive headlamps then I haven't noticed any difference to the BiXenons that I had on the SE version. Have seen them doing the "on" dance often enough but haven't noticed the headlights being any better than the standard Bixenons..................... 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

geoff - I'm with Smarticus on this - I WOULD BE VERY WORRIED THAT A LR DEALER SUPPLIES A CAR WITHOUT WARRANTY! If the car had only slight damage then this wouldn't be a warranty problem - get this checked out as I smell something!

The tyre monitoring is a waste of time, adaptives are fun but again not vital. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

Tim, those small extra lights are simply designed to light up the near distance (I guess no more than 20 feet) when turning. Ideal for carparks, turning into a driveway or moving very slowley in a tight lane. The adaptives are the main beam swivels towards the direction you are turning. It is barely noticeable, but you can just about spot it as the headlight beams turn slightly further than the vehicle turns. I went to a launch of the D3 at which Andy Wheel (the vehicle designer) stated that he thought Adaptives were a big leap forward in vehicle safety, akin to the introduction of Anti Lock Brakes. Afraid they have never made me feel any safer at all so far, indeed you can find yourself so intently trying to spot them working that you forget to concentrate on the road ahead - which isn't good for anyone's safety ! RRS TDv8 HSE Rimini

I agree with you chaps that the lack of warranty is strange and I'll take it to a local dealer to have it checked out as suggested. I looked up the vin on carfax and it checked out as being my car description with no report of accident or theft. The car is immaculate without a blemish as you'd expect with a new car.
I have a warranty book but every page is stamped 'void'. The dealer is not a LR dealer but has a range of 'unusual' cars. For example - they have three 'brand new' 2004 S type jags., ie. they have no mileage, look brand new in every respect but are 2004 models. £19,995 each. They told me of a BMW which they bought from the factory in Germany, it had been made but a fault was noticed, it was put to one side to be fixed later but was forgotten about for some years. They said that it probably sounds dubious but in fact such things are not so uncommon and they have relationships with a number of manufacturers to buy these 'mistakes'. My car is a 2008 model though and has all 2008 equipment. I expect it was cheap because it's 4.4 petrol which people don't want (I think they've stopped making it, not sure) but I do intend to keep it for a long time and it drives beautifully.

4.4V8 is still made but for export only, to places like the USA, China, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, Middle East etc where the TDv6 and TDv8 aren't sold. This could be why it has no warranty - it is a really weird spec for the UK dealer network that it won't register on the dealers computers here so they cannot give it the correct servicing. But that is no reason for it not to have a warranty, especially if it is a 2008MY! Anyway aren't you tasking it to a country within the EU? 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Tim, I'm taking it to Montenegro which is not yet in the EU and V.A. I would love to come to the pub meet and have someone more expert look at my car. Which pub, what time? The only problem I have is driving in the dark with my lights pointing at on-coming traffic but I'll chance it.
