'SPORT' MODE ON TRANSMISSION...

Hello all,

I'm new to the forum and to Range Rovers in general. Last summer, I purchased a 'previously owned' 2000 RR HSE, which did not come with the owner's manual. I love it, but I'm curious about the 'sport' button next to the shift lever. What is 'sport' mode, and when should/shouldn't it be utilized?

Since we're on the subject of transmissions. During a pretty heavy snowstorm last winter, I employed the 4WD. I was tentative to use it, because I've never driven a 4WD vehicle before. It seemed as though it didn't really want to go much faster than 40mph without sounding as though it was straining. Is that normal, or was it just a phenomenon with which I'm unfamiliar? The handling was tremendous, by the way! I can see the appeal of these wonderful vehicles.

Sorry for the 'dumb' questions, but it's better to ask than to find out the hard way.

Thanks in advance,

Donagh/Connecticut

I'm sure you'll get a whole flood of responses, but here goes....
Your RR is permenant 4-wheel drive. What you have refered to as 4-wheel drive is in fact, low ratio 4-wheel drive, which is why it doesn't go very fast. This is for negotiating extreme off-road gradients or maybe rock-crawling where you need slow speed and precision and not for road use.
Everywhere else, just leave it in normal range.
As for sport mode, this causes the gearbox to kick-down sooner and to hold on to gears longer for better performance. This only really applies to petrol engines rather than diesels, because diesels produce their power much lower down the rev range anyway.
Enjoy your new car.

Paul

Malaysia 2006 Range Rover Sport Supercharged Chawton White

Welcome to the forum.

You already own the Best 4x4 in the world which will perform extremely well in the wet in Normal Range . No need for the Low Range which by the way must NOT be used for normal road driving.

Don't worry, its a very capable car in all weather conditions, so push it and enjoy! Smile Malaysia Boleh!

Is there a possibility that the US versions of the vehicle are 2WD and that the Low Range is dedicated 4WD? I'm almost certain that the front wheels were slipping in the deep snow until I changed the shifter position. When I move the shifter to the right or 'Lo' (the 'red' PRNDL123) it tells me to wait for the 2nd differential to engage. I can actually hear and feel it. The difference between the two was like night and day in that snow storm. The 4WD in the normal 'D' position was like driving on dry, summer ground.

I hope it last a long time, it's a remarkable car.

Thanks for the responses, guys!

Donagh

Bobby,

Thanks a lot! Much appreciated! It's funny... last year I ordered an owners manual on disc from eBay. Well, it got here and would only work in PCs using Windows Operating Systems. I have all Macs. So I just laughed and forgot about it.

This time I went to the site you posted, and it wouldn't respond. It turn's out the automatic 'pop-up' blocker built in to Safari (Mac web browser) was defeating the website's function. LOL Once I figured it out (using Firefox) I turned off the 'pop-up' blocker, and it worked like a charm.

I was beginning to wonder if I was being prevented from RR knowlege by some cosmic prankster. ;^) Thanks again for the URL. It's a great resource.

Donagh

PS- What's a ffrr?

FFRR is the term used on the forum to describe the "Fully Fledged Range Rover" i.e. The traditional Range Rover. RRS refers to the Range Rover Sport which is the car this forum is dedicated too. Maybe you didn't realise, but the "Range Rover" & "Range Rover Sport" are 2 completely seperate models. The RRS is actually built on the same running gear as the Land Rover Discovery 3 rather than the traditional Range Rover.

Mambo, I think it's a P38a as the current FFRR (and I thought it referred to Full Fat) doesn't have a sport button either. Neutral TDV8 HSE in Java/Ebony with Zebrano Wood, RSE, Hybrid TV, and a few other bells and whistles.

I thought it was Full Fat when I first joined but was corrected by other members and told it was Fully Fledged.
It doesn't really matter does it? it's just a "slang" term to differentiate between the 2 different types of car for the benefit of the Forum, It's not an official term or anything. 2013 Discovery HSE Luxury - 3.0 SDV6 - Santorini Black

Yes! That's it! a P38. I don't know about the (a) part, but it says on the back: 4.6 HSK (not HSE). I hope I'm not posting in the wrong group and taking up all of your time with a vehicle that isn't part of this forum. Please forgive me if I am. It's not intentional. Anyway, I hope not. You fellows have been so genuine, friendly, and helpful.

OK,

I just found a related group called fullfatrr on this forum. It only goes back as far as 2002, but I'll give that a whirl. Thanks again for all of your patience and help. Hopefully, I'll see some of you over there. If I don't, have a great holiday season!

Best,

Donagh
