Wheel & tyre clearances with 20in wheels

Since Rupert seems to be having clearance issues with his 20in wheels and 295 tyre combination, it would be good for him to get some feedback from other owners how well their tyres clear the suspension workings up into the wheel arch.

Obviously, only 20in owners need respond, but please include:

- Tyre dimensions (width and profile)
- Alloy type (the standard SC alloy, Stormers, Kahns etc)
- An indication of what gap appears in your wheel arch between the tyre shoulder and the suspension/bulkhead

See here for the original thread and some context.

Thanks for your help, chaps Thumbs Up

First question would be are they genuine OE wheels or copies
If they are copies the offset needs to be the correct type. The offset determines where the wheel sits in relationship to the wheel arch (closer to the mounting hub or further away). If they are none OE Wheels the offset is very often slightly different and takes the tyre nearer to the suspension.

Hope this helps You don't stop playing because you get old, You get old because you stop playing.

Well I would turn the wheel over and read the numbers on the spokes
You will have for example 120-- 5 -- 53 on one of the spokes
The 120 is the diameter of the studs in mm
The 53 is the offset - which on an RRS can go from about 32-58
Check this reading with some off another member that has genuine wheels of the same type.
This will confirm that they are as they should be. You don't stop playing because you get old, You get old because you stop playing.

Presuming the Stormer wheel has the same offset as the 10 Spoke, then the Stormer fitted with a 295x45x20 tyre would have 11mm LESS clearance - problem solved. Presumably Envoy's non OE Stormers have a different off set to give a 25 mm plus clearance.

So perhaps it might be a good idea if those owners, who have either 10 Spoke or Stormer wheels and have 295x45x20 tyres fitted, check to make sure there is sufficient clearance between the front tyre and the suspension upright at the top. Idea

Good work there rrsjo Thumbs Up

It looks like we may have found something here guys.

I'll add my voice to rrsjo's call for anyone running 295 / 45's on their rims to check clearances. Exclamation

Edited to Add: My mate just checked the rims to see what’s stamped on the rear of the spokes.

This is the report……

U9 GRA RRC503820

CD086 EH2 53

That’s all.

I would presume the 53 is the offset measurement referred to by Nutty Nige Confused
