Warning Warning - expression definition on the way, all disinterested look away NOW

Hair of the dog (that bit you) - this expression originates in medieval England where it was thought that if you suffered a dog bite, the cure involved getting hold of some of the guilty dog's hair. This hair was then pressed onto the wound (indeed stuffed into or even stiched into, the wound), to serve as a cure.

As with many of these things, there is actually a scientific basis for believing that this cure may indeed work. If a dog is infected with a disease (such as rabies) it will be carrying antibodies to that disease. These antibodies may well be present on its fur, so pressing them into the wound may indeed help fight off infection.

Another true story.... and a good excuse to drink more to forget the hangover. Works for me Thumbs Up RRS TDv8 HSE Rimini
