It’s broke!

Hey I’m new, I’ve also done a search but nothing came up for the fault code. We’ve got a 2012 sport which has been great. Had a full service Monday just gone then yesterday driving along the red triangle came up with the words ‘Restricted Performance’ then went into limp mode. Luckily I was next to my house so parked up and left it. Upon starting the red triangle is still there. I have top cover with AA which includes parts and garage cover up to about £500 which is something I guess. They came out this morning and he said the code P1247 come up and he believes it’s the turbo. The pipes on the turbo are inflating fine so he’s unsure. It also flashed up on his reader something about the EGR valve. We’ve taken it to the local garage to me looked at Monday morning. Upon driving it’s ok on the flat, happy at 60mpb on the small dual carriageway but couldn’t even manage 8mph up a hill (we were followed by the AA truck and it wasn’t far)

So there is stays until the garage open on Monday. Does anyone have any clue at all what could be wrong? Thank you.

Should be a couple more digits with that code, if it is -00 it looks like that code may well be associated with another code or codes to narrow it down a bit more.

Cheers

You made the mistake of letting a garage/dealer touch it.
If you cannot do it yourself best sell it Always listen to old people or when they die you will live on in ignorance.

That's a helpful response Rolling Eyes

Spend 3k on a dealer diag system, another £5-6k (at least!) on tools and equipment so you can fix it yourself, or sell it

It is in fact the most helpful response you will get

£120 on a good scanner a set of sockets and spanners along with some trolley jacks and ramps and you are away. Always listen to old people or when they die you will live on in ignorance.

I think that’s the only code, apart from something about the EGR valve. The garage aren’t confident in finding/fixing so suggested another local garage which deals with these cars more.

What could throw a P1247 - low turbo boost pressure code and a EGR valve code? There’s no extra noises/smoke, only runs in limp mode and only manages about 8mph up hill (AA getting it to a garage)

Meanwhile I’m paying over £70 per day on a hire car 😭

You can do a rough check for an inlet manifold crack by doing a TC stall test. Clear the error message, stand on the brake with the left foot, put it in drive and apply the throttle until the revs stop climbing. A cracked manifold will whistle and the restricted performance message will reappear. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

or take out the air filter ...block off the box air inlet and set off a plumbers smoke bomb in a tin in the air box....seal crack with JB weld and fish plates as LR Time ...

Oh sorry you cannot do that you took it to a garage... Always listen to old people or when they die you will live on in ignorance.

Just making the point that once you let it out your hands you are powerless....Unless its for a job you have had a quote for like changing a rear oil seal that maybe you cannot do yourself.

The cheap smoke test I suggested works well Always listen to old people or when they die you will live on in ignorance.

Your responses are coming off as rather sh*tty, whether you see it or not.

I've had numerous JLR cars, done a ton of work myself and they still have to go in to the pros for things I am not comfortable tackling.

P1247-00 is a generic "Low Boost Pressure" code

The causes are either:
Turbocharger/s not generating enough pressure
A lack of air drawn into the turbo
A boost leak between the outlet of the turbo and the inlet valves of the engine
A restriction in the exhaust, preventing the turbo from spinning properly

By far, the most common issue is a split inlet manifold. Lift the engine cover and look for oil and/or soot staining on the plastic manifolds

Ideally, we need a bit more information about when and how the fault occurs (full throttle or coasting, primary or secondary turbo actuation etc) but first place to check is the inlet manifolds. After this, it does take some in depth diagnostic work Thumbs Up

He can go to the garage and ask them to do a test. Many places are actually keen to learn so that they can do stuff in future. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
