I have a 24MY RRS with the electrically deploylable tow bar. Took it and the caravan up to Yorkshire last month without any problems but went down to Lydney over the weekend and developed a horrible groaning sound from the rear of the car when turning slowly .

Any thoughts?

How do I work out if its the car or the Alko hitch on the caravan?

Without being flippant (honestly trying to be helpful), do you have a friend with a towbar who could tow your van and see if you get the noise, OR borrow a friends van for a few mins to try. Without eliminating one variable hard to be sure. If not possible drive slowly with someone next to the hitch as you turn and see if they can hear where its coming from. When we tow (bmw x3) we get various noises and its different everytime, can never figure it out but van is always still behind when we arrive so all good

I am no expert so take what you want from this:

Firstly... I would check the alko friction pads quick and easy. (you-tube).
2.... Check wheel bearings on the caravan, same as car, jack up feel for play top and bottom side to side...(you-tube again if unsure).
3..... Check handbrake on the caravan. Easy again.

If all OK rule out the caravan

That leaves the car.....Dealer im'e afraid .

Not much help I know. however, in the last 3/4 years I have had all three symptoms gone wrong on the caravan and fixed.

Just my two penneth  Rangerover Sport 2016 4.4 sdv8 A/B loire blue.

I would also say it will be the pads in the hitch.

Brake cleaner and a scotchbrite normally sorts them.

Assume you have removed the paint from the ball?

All good advice . Funnily enough I had removed the paint from the tow ball and cleaned it with brake cleaner before this trip . Indeed this was the only change from our previous successful trip and I was concerned that maybe that wasn't the right thing to do .

I will have a look at the Alko pads , hopefully Youtube will be helpful .

Ah a trip to the dealer , I cant wait , I guarantee the dealer will advise me the caravan is at fault ...

I would like to think as a potential safety issue they will look at it properly ( dont laugh ) .

I havent got another caravan trip planned for a while so may be a tad slow reporting back here with the results . However if there are hold ups on a motorway near you due to a caravan going AWOL I do apologise !!

If the paint was still on for the first journey it will have contaminated the pads.

Some brake cleaner and emery tape will soon have things sorted.

That sounds logical !
