Replacement a/c condenser and drier 3.6 TDV8

Turns out my condenser needs replacing. The official LR ones are very expensive (£664) however I see the Nissens versions at around £110 with drier on eBay and other suppliers much cheaper than LR.

Seems they’re a common part number across a lot of the LR range ?

Thoughts on what to buy appreciated !

What’s the labour time involved in installation ? I take it it’s best left to a specialist, although if it’s diy I do enjoy a small project.

Definitely go Nissens.



As for difficulty, I think you could do it with the bumper and rebar off pretty easy. The cooling package is nearly the same as my 3.0. I’d think it’s a 4-6 hour job to do depending on skill level. 2011 RRS HSE Luxury 3.0 TDV6 Fuji White on Ebony/Ivory

DIY !

2 ways.

1). Remove bumper. Remove crash structure. (Torx bolts can be seized)
Or
2) drain coolant. Remove fan. Remove both rads. Change condenser.

Thanks NoExpert and Andy. Will see what the garage come back with cost wise. They’re doing body off turbo changes etc all time, so no doubt have condensers down to a fine art.

Will see if YouTube can give me some guidance.

Also need a new torque converter shaft seal, which I’m definitely not attempting !

Been watching a very useful video on replacing the rad and condenser for a RRS 2005-2013. All looks pretty doable. The only thing fazing me is the fan removal, which looks like I'll need special tools to get off.

Are they a "thing" or can I use spanners ? Happy to spend £20 or so on the right tools to save paying a mechanic to do a job I can do.

Edit - just found the tools on Powerful. £40 which is an expensive pair of tools for single use.

If I go the bumper off and slam panel off route, I take it it's a much easier route to success - seized bolts aside ?

Nissens condenser ordered - £100 delivered off ebay.

If the fans not been off recently they can be a real pain and time consuming.

I couldn’t remember if you had already removed the bumper before.

You need to check, you may have a larger intercooler. Or other rads in the way. But even so…

Front bumper off doesn’t worry me, I had the rear off recently to paint the parking sensors. From what I’ve seen it’s a case of moving the top of the rad forward a bit - hence undoing top rad hoses, unclippimg the cooler pipes in front of the condenser, undoing the condenser block (with the seals replaced on reinstall) and popping it out ?

There’s a couple of double threaded bolts with no head in the kit, as well as a scroll pin. Not sure where they go.

Usually the coolant rad is the main structure.

The AC condenser hangs off the coolant rad. So two bolts. Lift up out the slots.
As you say, the pipe joint and seals.
From what i remember in mine.

Had to bend the pipes slightly for good alignment.

Did mine a couple of years ago using a Nissens condenser,, wasn't in a race to do it,, fiddly rather than difficult. I'm sure there are pics in my gallery but basically grill off, lights off and bumper off, loosen off slam panel and pull forward, this allows wiggle room to get the condenser out as it is inbetween a couple of others. There are a couple of hidden fasteners that are awkward to spot. A couple of screws either side in the wheel arches that secure to the slam panel,,,, taking these out allows the slam panel to be moved further forward. 2010 RRS, TDV8
bali Blue / colour coded
side steps / flappy paddles
black perforated leather
22" overfinch
heated everything, TV,fridge ...... now with gold calipers and mud flaps !( black mud flaps that is) !!
Many years ago,,,,, 1955 series 1 landie , sometimes wish I had kept it

Condenser arriving tomorrow apparently, so getting all geared up to sort the change over at the weekend.

A few questions for the skilled and able on here if I may...

1.) From what I've read, the T40 bolts holding the slam panel on are prone to snapping. Does anyone have a part nr or size, so that I can have some on standby for when that happens to me ?

2.) The various guides I've read say to remove the front bumper. Mine is a MY2010 3.6 TDV8, however, Disco Mikey's excellent Disco 3 writeup has the Disco bumper still in place. Is it necessary to remove the bumper on a RRS 2010 ?

3.) I was also going to order an long extension to get to the bottom bolts that hold the rad in place. Is it necessary to undo these to move the radiator in towards the engine and if so, can they just be loosened or do they need to come out ?

Will report back with any tips I come across.
