I need help in Germany

Hello,

My name is Julian, I already own a Defender TD5 and that's why I took the chance to get the Range Rover Sport from 2006 from my neighbor.

It was his dad's car, and he passed away four years ago. So the car was standing for a long time. His father always had his issues with the car.

It went into limp mode very often and he payed almost 20.000 € for repair shops but they never solved the problem.

But I asked him anyway if he would sell me the car.

So he agreed and we picked it up. It was in front of a warehouse for the last few years. Dead battery of course.

So we jumped it, and it started right up. Perfect. He drove the Range Rover and I drove my Defender. The Range Rover jumped into limp mode right away but continued to drive fine. So we drove home four Kilometers.

In my driveway he shut the engine off and the next day I put a new battery in it.

But here comes the problem.

The engines starts perfect, but after a few seconds it dies. If you start it again directly it dies even faster. If you want 5 minutes you have it running a longer time.

This morning I started it up. It ran perfectly fine. But then the engine began to shake, like it would get not enough diesel and then went into limp mode with the F it the dash and then it was running perfectly fine. I let it run for like 20 minutes. I was able to rev it to 2500 rpm. And when it was finally warm I shut it off and wanted to try again to start it and it died right away.

I have a Nanocom.

There are some fault codes for lost communication and stuff like this but the only engine fault code is P0191 for fuel rail pressure signal stays low. But in limp mode it was running perfectly. So it has to have the required pressure from the HPFP

I changed the fuel filter. No difference. I ordered a new fuel rail pressure sensor. It will arrive on Wednesday.
And I checked the pressure of the LPFP on the Schrader valve. It is 0.5 Bar. And I cleaned all the connectors from the control units behind the battery. There was no corrosion on the contacts but I cleaned it with contact spay.

Sadly my Nanocom can't tell me the Fuel Rail pressure. I asked them already if there is a update soon.

Maybe someone of you experienced the same problem before. I hope you guys can help me.

Thanks Julian

Hello Andy
Thank you for the quick answer.

I used exactly his post to check the pressure. Hat also 0.5 Bar.

Can someone explain me, how the fuel lines are supposed to be "wired"
What I just saw and really surprised me was that if I disconnect both lines, the feed and the return line and activate the fuel pump both lines push diesel??? That's strange, or is is supposed to be like this?

Maybe another shop connected something wrong in the past?

Tomorrow I can take some pictures of my fuel lines.

And maybe a video too.

Thank you!!!

Here are some pictures.

If I see it correctly, the Schrader Valve is on the return line, right?

Hope someone can help me

Thanks

I think both lines push diesel as the return may go to the filter

I would think the valve was in the supply pipe.

Check the filter connections under the car. Common to get wrong. There should be a colour coded sheet.

See colour code here

Do you maybe have a diagram to see how the lines should be connected?

All I found was this one:

And it looks like the fuel line goes in to the filter first and then into the cooler and then on top of the engine. And in my case the fuel line from the tank meets with the return line with the injectors on top of the engine and then goes in the HPFP.

Is this possible?

Can someone please take some pictures for me from their running car, so I can make Shure it's not this what causes my problems

Thank you very much

Workshop manual here might help: https://www.mediafire.com/file/yunzrqm47py4pww/RRSL320WSM2006.pdf 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Sorry, I'm away from my car for the week. I think mine has an earlier fueling system than yours anyway.

If that workshop manual doesn't help, try looking on disco3.co.uk

I just checked all the fuel lines.

The Schrader valve is on the "pressure" side.

But both lines get pressure from the pump. That's normal. This picture shows the fuel lines at the fuel filter

So the fuel, coming from the tank is connected with the fuel return line from the fuel cooler. They go into the fuel filter and into the return line to the tank. And at this connection there is also a connection tho the line to the HPFP. So in the end there is pressure on both lines.

You can see it in the picture very well.

Tomorrow I will put in the new Fuel Rail pressure sensor and hope it will be the solution to all my problems.

We will see.

Thank you guys

So the picture is very blurry. It's on page 3796 in the Manual

Because it’s been sitting along time , perhaps fresh diesel might help.
Not usually a problem with cars, diesel bug is a well known problem in the boating community Thumbs Up

That's a problem I had with my Defender.
We call it Diesel Pest in Germany.

But I do have pressure on the low pressure system and I also measured the flow on the Schrader valve. So fuel is coming and there is nothing blocked. I put a new diesel filter in it anyways.

Hope it will run tomorrow. I will keep you updated.

The high Pressure pump should not be it as the car runs in limp mode (if it starts) great and I can rev it up to 2500 rpm.

But we will see

Oh and I tanked 20 liters fresh diesel in the tank at home. Car is almost half full now.

Thank you all
