Evening guys, was walking past my 3 week old RRS in the driveway tonight and notice the fuel cover not flush with the body, thought will give it a small push and low and behold it springs open, but car is locked and alarmed.

I thought I would do a little investigation and low and behold I find it is not a locking fuel cover on 100000K car what the f"???"???? Are landrover playing at are the taking loyal customers for a ride or have I missed something?

Just out of interest, why would it fail a MOT because the fuel filler flap closes but doesn't actually lock when the car is locked? I would imagine L/R have either not connected the plug or something at the factory or it is another cheap L/R cost cutting exercise if they are not a legal requirement for the MOT, and if you do want one it's a optional extra at a ridiculous cost. The latter being my guess.

I think about 25 years ago they introduced a requirement for caps to be locking and was
Checked at mot. Maybe that requirement has gone?

Apparently L/R stopped fitting locking fuel flaps due to a chip shortage on the new defender at some point, don't really know if that statement is correct though, so perhaps that now applies to the sport as well if it is. Odd really because if a locking cap is a legal requirement then L/R should be supplying these vehicle if not with a locking flap at least with a locking cap which is a rather backwards step. There may be a few owners around with new vehicles that don't realise the flap doesn't lock as not sure it is the sort of thing you would normally check when locking the car unless you happened to notice as the OP did.

From what I can make out the connector isn't present ?

A site which appears to be from 2008 says it nneds to be lockable

Incorrect fuel cap. To pass an MOT test the fuel system must be complete with a locking fuel filler cap. If the cap can't be locked then the vehicle will fail the MOT test.



However the current gov.uk site doesn't, it just says :

2.3 Fuel system
The fuel system will be inspected to check that:

there are no leaks
the pipes and hoses are secure and in a good condition
the fuel cap fastens and seals securely
