Couple of questions for someone not used to PHEV and how they function, and some real world data...

1) Went to a 50kwh charger yesterday. Battery is 38kwh, so why did the car think it needed 1h 22m to fully charge?????

2) Might be a dumb question, but my new P550e, with a supposed range of 72 miles, maxes out at 59 miles when fully charged. Is it smart enough to know that, in cold weather, it won't get the full range?

Some early stats; with a 50% electric charge yesterday, and using satnav so the car was aware of our destination, a journey from Loughborough to Bucks yesterday (105 miles), with quite a lot of slow moving traffic en route, delivered average fuel economy of just over 42mpg. 32 miles of the journey were on EV power. I calculate that means we got 28mpg on the petrol engine.

I filled the batteries at a 50kwh fast charger, for just under £10, that works out at around 50p per kw. At that price, it is slightly cheaper to use only petrol which seems a bit nuts. Petrol would have cost £8 for the same journey.

I think the regen also helps. The first part of my journey, from Lincs to Loughborough (70 miles) , with a fully discharged battery, delivered 27 mpg, but 10 miles on EV power, which is quite good regen, and suggests a scary 22mpg on petrol without regen!

That's why it's so vital to get the fast charger at home, but at an install price of over £1,000, you need a lot of miles to make it worthwhile. I guess averaging it over the short local journeys will make the economics much better.

1) because charge speeds are not linear. They taper off after 50/60% to ensure the battery’s long life. And remain slow of the battery is cold. Also; the input charge may not peak at 50kwh even if the charger says it can.

2) yup. Depends on how you drive it too. If you drive it like you stole it; and temperatures are low; expect a lower number. Will probably be lower in real life too. 70mph on electricity only I’d wager you’d get 40 miles. Much more in town. 2022 P440e AB

My maths tell me that electricity at 30p per kw = 20% less than fuel at £1.50 per litre.
- so charging in wild away from home is nuts.

The trick is to get your power from Octopus or similar for about 7p per kwh.

Then its (nearly) free fuel. 2022 P440e AB

Sadly, seems the IO go does not work with my pod point charger and the MY24 PHEVs. If I select a P400e it says it’s compatible, but not with the P550e. Very strange indeed.

I just use the schedule in the car/app to control when it charges.

I tried the Smart Charging with my P400e but it sometimes only partially charged so I stopped using it.
