transmission oil & filter at service or flush

Hi guys,

Been a while since i have been on here which is a good sign i guess, that i've not had any issues.

But i had a question i was hoping someone could help me with.

I've got my 150,000 mile / 10 year service, its a big one. I've attached the LR service list. LR are quoting over 2k. Which i can't afford, so i'm getting quotes from different independent specialists.

But i'm having some conflicting advice from different independents.

Regarding the transmission oil & filter, one indy is saying you're much better off having a flush and leaving the filter in place.
(the price is similar for the flush is similar to oil and filter change though)

And the other indy is saying we advise, if your transmission is fine and your not having any issues, do not change transmission oil and filter and do not flush and just leave it alone, its sealed for life.

I have read both these forums, most people are saying do a flush, but there are conflicting opinions in these forums too.

Also regarding the “Replacement of Dynamic Response valve block filter & top up system” they are saying if these filters are changed is can cause pressure issues within the ACE valve block itself.

And other indy is saying, maybe just change the fluid and just check if the filters are dirty.

So a little confused on what to do. My RRS is a 2012 5.0lt SC and has only done 70k it has had main dealer service history its whole life and since i bought it 3 years ago, its has main dealer and indy specialists so i have followed all the correct services plans each year. So would like to keep servicing to LRs recommendations.

Hi,

regarding "sealed for life" Censored think that is L/R's responsibility life and not the gearboxes life Rolling Eyes

does the same indep not change the engine oil if the engines running fine as well Shocked

preventative maintenance oil changes are worth doing a flush is a Transfusion so maybe more oil changed than when a filter change done.

dont know about the ACE but can not see the logic of replacing the oil and just checking the filter Exclamation gone that far change it anyway

I looked into the gearbox flush myself and in the end I went for the service, including oil and filter.

The reasoning I did this on my 125k miles 2005 4.2 SC were because of my Indy's advice and after reading his blog;

at 70k I’d just do a flush. I’d steer clear of the indie that says don’t bother it’s sealed for live. I had mine done a couple of years ago. Whilst it was the oldest car of the day it was the lowest mileage. My oil was the blackest. I had no gearbox issues and was purely preventative.

The advice from the manufacturers, ZF, is to change the trans oil at around 60k, so anyone saying sealed for life is plain wrong. A Cheshire expat in France.

My view is that you should do both, not one or other.. i.e. why would you do a 'megaflush' without filter change?

I know many people do, but it beats me why you'd go to the trouble of doing a full megaflush without changing the filter.

The filter isn't that important. The oil is. Simple really. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

IIRC it's not really a "filter" as per oil/air type. More of a strainer....
I had a Megaflush, but no filter at 80K on my L322. No issues before, no issues after.
ZF say change it, so change it. LR got it wrong IMHO.

My SDV6 (which I bought from DrRob above) had its second flush at the recent service. It's on 136k miles and was previously done around 70k miles.

It costs no more than doing the filter and changing a bit of the oil (the LR technique doesn't change all of the oil, the flush does) and means you have a gearbox filled with fresh oil containing all of the nice additives that are the important part of the oil change 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed
