Intelligent Speed Assistance - Is this a wind up???

Not happy with this idea. Not because I go around the towns at 60mph but sometimes you need a burst of power to safely negotiate a situation. It sounds like the system will not instantly reduce your speed but how does it know exactly what you are trying to achieve? And external control of my car sounds very dangerous - what happens if there's a glitch in the system??

Agreed, I do not like the sound of this at all. What if the speed limit raising isn’t detected, sign obscured or missing perhaps, you could still be stuck at 30 on an open road or dual carriageway Joined the X5 45e club

One small remote software update and BINGO, your next speeding ticket is on its way.

It can be overridden by the driver:

The system has an on/off switch. The default setting for the system is on, but the speed limiter can be disabled by being switched off – at least for the time being.

It’s possible that the authorities might scrap the option of turning it off in the future.

If you turn it off, it should stay off until you restart the vehicle.

Even when the ISA system is on, there are some circumstances when you can override it. An example of this is if you’re overtaking on a road where there’s a decrease in speed limit.

After alerting you, the car should automatically start to slow down. By pushing down hard on the accelerator, you can override the system and complete the manoeuvre safely.

If you stay above the speed limit, the system should sound a warning and display a visual alert. The alerts remain on until the driver is within the speed limit.

It's not external control. The car will read the speed limit signs and / or use GPS location and stored maps (as used by the in-car satnav) to determine what the speed limit is.

I can see why such systems are being introduced and I can see that it is also the next step on the road to autonomous cars. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

More modern systems don't hold the maps on a hard drive somewhere, updated only by the main dealer. They use Google Maps and similar using mobile data plans. I would bet that this system will be linked to something similar. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Not on my MY21.5 RRS… map data held onboard, presumably in a hard drive or SSD, and updated by downloading a new version from the JLR site to a USB stick, which is then uploaded to the car.

As good as speed sign recognition and GPS are, the system has problems with signs that require interpretation, eg school zones, which list the applicable times for lower speeds. It also sometimes misreads the electronic variable speed signs. Then there are obviously issues with roadworks, where the restriction sign is in place, but not the de-restriction sign. MY21.5 HSE 221KW D16

Perhaps the stuff that LR sell when this system is mandated will be different to what they sell now. Although, being LR, their system will not work properly and cause all sort of issues. And they'll just say we were using it wrong. Wink 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Until they design it to default on and assume the worst case scenario and limit the car to 20mph. Don't laugh, I can see it happening. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

The modern equivalent has started. On the M1 past Sheffield yesterday, Saturday and not busy at all, the variable speed limit flashed up 60……and said “speed limit due to air quality”. I’ve never heard that one before, with this new system we won’t even need smart motorways, the6 could just do it 5h3mselves. Sad Sad Joined the X5 45e club
