United Kingdom 2010 Range Rover Sport 3.0 TDV6 HSE Stornoway Grey
Differential Differences

Does anyone know what the differences are between the following rear differentials, if any;

1) 2010 Range Rover Sport
2) 2004 - 2009 Range Rover Sport
3) 2004 - 2009 Discovery 3

Are they the same physical shape, ratios, splines etc?

Petrol or diesel?

I think that so long as they're the same fuel, the diffs are the same.

New Zealand 2013 Range Rover Sport Supercharged Autobiography Santorini Black

The Supercharged petrol uses the 3.54:1 ratio, the Naturally Aspirated petrol uses the 3.73:1. Later cars with 8 speed box use 3.21:1

I did wonder if the workshop manual was correct as it seems to have info that doesn't agree with itself! Rolling with laughter 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Just had another look at different editions of the W/S manuals and they do contradict themselves a bit, found another bit that say's N/A petrol engine if it happens to have the electronic locking diff it is the 3.54:1 ration, so who knows, L/R don't appear to and they build the things. Rolling with laughter

Diesel Models in particular.

I have a 2010 3.0TDV6 RRS with non locking Diff.

I’m looking into the options for fitting an ARB air locker. I had one in my old D2 and it made such a difference. The fronts aren’t a problem as they supply a part for it. However the rear diff only has a part for D3 2004 - 2009. Hence my question as to what the differences are.

You will have a Centre diff lock on your Sport. I have never not gotten anywhere that a car with a rear locker as well as the centre locker fitted has gone. Someone did retro fit the locking rear diff to a Sport (or Disco?). I remember reading a thread about it somewhere. It was a while ago. A bit of a job to do but perhaps better than an aftermarket one because it works with Terrain Response and the various ECUs in the same way as the centre diff lock.

One thing I'm surprised by is that no one has done a mod for the centre diff. It ought to be simple enough to have a switch that energises the centre diff locking motor to move it to the fully locked position. I guess it would need some control system to ensure it only moved enough to lock the clutch pack without burning the electric motor out. Yes, I know that TR locks it automatically, but sometimes it only partly locks it unless you're in the correct TR setting such as rock crawl.

Having said all of that, I've always managed to get out of whatever it is I'm struggling in - for example mud. Yes, it can get messy, but it gets out. Been close to not doing it a couple of times, admittedly, but never had to be towed that I remember. And that's in 2 different RRS each with only the centre diff lock. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
