engine "pinking" noise

Sad have problem with my rrs v6 noise I think from engine sounds like petrol engine "pinking" it dosen't do it when revving engine in neutral but when accelerating don't like to think it's small ends, could it be diesel knock?? Took it to highly reccomended indipendant 4 x 4 servicer and he said sports do make this noise and not to worry unless it gets worse but its bugging me any thoughts please.

It's hard to imagine what the noise sounds like - maybe pop it into a dealer for peace of mind, they won't charge you to tell you what the problem may be..and perhaps give you a quote if anything wrong...

Otherwise come to the London meet next weekend and ride in one of the TDV6 2.7's there, to see if it makes the same noise - mine in a 56 plate TDV6 HSE - you're welcome to have a listen or a drive

Nick Thumbs Up

I hope this does not sound a silly or offencive, but are you sure its not had any petrol in by mistake.
They do make a pinking noice from the diesel if they get a drop of petrol in by mistake.

The amount of times i have seen cars in my workshop that have had it in from a new petrol station or different driver filling it up is quite high.

That said, as above they do have a tinkle to them under load i noticed it a lot more when i fitted the TDV6 into my defender project where the sound padding is less.

I have the exact same problem on my 2.7. I have never noticed it before, however my aircon has recently stopped working so I have been driving with the window down. I have noticed it more over the last few days. Its not a knock, as you said it sounds like a petrol engine that is to far advanced or retarded. Its A pinking sound like a small marble in a glass jar under load. I personally would not worry about it. I have done the research and it appears to be very common in the 2.7. yet it is very annoying. PS I must add. the pinking is not as loud when premium fuel is used. I suspect it could be low quality fuel etc.
