United Kingdom 2010 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Stornoway Grey
I’ve come to the dark side...

Hi Folks, after 6 1/2 years, 68k miles and about £10k in maintenance, I’ve sold my Discovery 3 and bought a Range Rover Sport.

The Discovery got used and abused, doing everything from commuting through supporting a lot of off road motorsport events to towing 3.5t trailers of wood on a regular basis. It always got me there (sometimes with a few turn off and then turn on again) but did get slot of preventative maintenance - over 200 miles offroad in weekend supporting a Hillrally wears out suspension quickly! At 174k it was time to move it on.

I needed a replacement and it had to do exactly the same, although with less time spent in the mud. Wanted a Discovery 4, but didn’t like the prices or the reputation of the v6 crank and then a friend mentioned the RRS, so I started doing some research and quickly came up with a wish list - TDV8, facelift model, dark colour and black leather. I then found this beauty - 102k miles, massive history, excellent condition with just a few minor stone chips and car park marks and only 2 owners with the 2nd one only 4 months.

Just getting it sorted to how I want it with a few jobs done so far:
Fitted a fixed LR tow bar
Replaced the drivers seat cushion and element as the bolster was pretty soft
About to get some 19” wheels with AT tyres
iPhone connection and Brodit mount
Put the genuine LR grill and side vents back on (is anyone looking for the take-offs as they’re about to go up for sale?)

Already about 700 miles including collecting from Chester and bring it back to Devon and I have to say it’s the best car I’ve ever had! Comfortable, fairly rapid and getting about 27-28 mpg Ona motorway run. Only bad point is the lack of storage compared to the Discovery - nothing in the sides of the boot and very narrow door pockets...

There will be a few more mods, it nothing silly. I am thinking of chipping it once I’ve finished paying for it in a few months time - thoughts?

Cheers, Toby

And now I can’t figure out how to get rid of the duplicated photos...

Oh, and welcome to the dark side. Thumbs Up

The TDV8 is the best engine fitted to the L320 RRS. Cool 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Nice car , had my TDV8 about 18 months now & like you think it's the best car I've ever had , can't advise on mods as mine is completely standard.

Welcome!

Really can't fault the colour choice Thumbs Up

I've had my TDV6 nearly 9 years and 80k miles and I've treated it the same as your old Disco and it keeps on coming back for more, so I imagine your RRS will be the same. The only difference to you is I've put a Trust TL1 fixed towbar on as the ground clearance at the rear is better. 19s and Grabber AT3s do the job very well. If you're still going to play off-road, an Easilift is also worthwhile

Hi, had a TowTrust TL1 on the Discovery. Trying to make sure this one doesn’t get used offroad, as it does get expensive in suspension ball joints, bushes and wheel bearing plus general hedge scratches etc.

Got a set of RR wheels coming my way, with Wrangler Duratracs in 255/55r19 for very reasonable money, so going to give them a go and then see whether to change them

Too right, TDV8 suits the car well, and it pulls soo nicely from 50 to reasonable overtaking speeds... Whistle

Stornaway Grey which is one of the best colours, not footballer or drug dealer

Just looked at the easilift, wish I’d known about that years ago, looks good.

My TDV8 was Stornoway Grey too. I do miss that motor and part of me wishes I'd kept it. But it would have been starship mileage by now - it had over 175k on when I sold it and I've done over 60k in the SDV6 that replaced it. I did recently check the MOT history to see if it was still on the road. Recent MOT was 198k. So not bad at all.

Mine did a bit of towing, did a bit of off road, did a lot of miles. Lovely vehicle once I got it in to the hands of a decent indie for the oily work. Much missed. Crying or Very sad 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

They’re such good all round cars, being good everything including drinking!

Having a decent indie is the key to running these cars. They have the experience and knowledge to diagnose and sort problems quickly and the techniques to do the work easily, such as not lifting the body unless you need to...

If you have Brembo brakes, there is a chance that RR wheels may not fit. Some 19s do but some don't, eh Eaters?

Not got Brembos so no problem there. Look just right in the arches too

Thumbs Up

Someone else that realises that the best way to "fill the arches" is a smaller rim with a bigger sidewall, not a 22 inch rim with a rubber band sprayed on it. Bow down Thumbs Up 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Too right, looks much better, especially if the tyre is a bit knobbly and has a square profile like offroad tyres do. As they’re RR rims, they are 19x7.5J with a 47 ET so just pull the bead in a fraction and a little more offset to fill the arch a bit better too.

All in all, I’m very happy with the car! Very Happy
