Heated Steering Wheel Upgrade

Just finished this project, with a few lessons learnt, so I thought i'd share here, because sharing is caring as they say Wink

Short summary, you need the right bits and it's then dead easy.

1) Battery off
2) Remove airbag and wheel
3) Replace Clock spring (rotary coupler) behind wheel for heated version (LR084446) - wire is already present to from main car loom to plug into this coupler.
4) Fit heated wheel with correct loom (module) and switch packs, airbag back on and battery on.

Job done! Its a great addition for winter. As I said that is all there is to it in my case 2016 HSE. Difficult bit it getting exact spec wheel off ebay in decent nick. Most of them fail at this last point, else its expensive from LR new.

Get the right bits - 30 mins tops. 👍 3.0 SDV6 HSE L494

Hi,

thanks for this! With this change in weather it's something I'm looking into...

So if I manage to source a heated wheel, do I then just need the clock spring (I think the part number is LR084446 - yours had an extra 4 on the end) to complete the job?
Did you go direct to LR for this or find another source?

Thanks! MY16 RRS 3.0 SDV6 HSE Dynamic

RRSporter, dont suppose you removed your steering wheel trim piece (the U shaped bit at the bottom) whilst the wheel was off did you? Im keen to know how it removes and if the airbag has to be off the car to allow it to release?
Thanks
Carl

Hi part number typo duly amended - good spot!

I went to LR for the RH switch pack. eBay for the clock spring. It’s also fitted to vogue and evoque I think so they do come up. Heated wheel beware of a loom change I think in 2016. Later cars have wires spaced out in multi connector on the wheel loom. Earlier cars they are all in a row. Heated or non heated / active or std cruise makes no difference to
The pin outs on the multi connector. Model year does! The function buttons won’t work if you mix these two. Don’t ask me how I know!!

1st pic is factory fit my car prior. 2nd pic is wheel with incorrect loom (and incorrect cruise controls) for my car. As you can see there are a few combos to get right. You can change looms and switch packs, and as far as I’m aware any heated wheel will do provided you insert correct loom and RH switch pack. (This is all
Pre facelift obviously).

Didn’t touch this it’s part of the main wheel. I’d say it prob bonded on, possibly clipped on? Almost certainly needs airbag off as it tucks under though looking at a photo mid job. Cheers 3.0 SDV6 HSE L494
