The best insect screens are agricultural ones....if you have a John Deere Tractor dealer near you I'd go there and have a look at the screens they use to protect the radiators/oil coolers....you could probably adapt one of those |

By turbo timers do you mean some method of maintaining oil pressure as the turbo spins down when you switch off the engine??

Re :whirring noise on shutdown caused by turbo oiling......mine shuts down abruptly with no extra noise apart from heat "tinkling"

This on a TD5 Martin? If so I think you are hearing the centrifugal oil filter spin down, mine takes around 20secs to spin down when warm. As for turbo timers with todays technology on the design of the bearings and the variable rate speed of the impeller etc there is no need for it.

I'd endorse these comments, providing the engine is allowed some low speed time after a hard run then time at idle doesn't seem critical in my experience - let alone needing to force oil through post-shutdown. My TD5 has 175k MILES (>110k stage 2 tuned) on it on the original turbo, regular oil and filter changes and good quality oil seems to do the trick.
