SIM Card - How much data do you use?

I bought a 24gb SIM in April 2019 from 3 with 24 months validity, so the data will expire in a couple of months. I have just looked at the data used and can see I still have over 23gb of data use, which is crazy.

How much data do others use and how do you use that data (or am I missing out on using connected systems)?

Do I buy another 24gb card and install that (cost circa £2 per month) or is there another option?

This looks a possibility but you have to use the card to make a call or SMS every 6 months to keep it active:

Three’s Data Reward SIM offer gives customers 200MB of free internet every month via their special pay as you go sim. The deal has no catches and you’ll get 200mb of data free every month without the need to top-up your SIM card.

To take advantage of the free 200MB of data, you’ll need to order a Data Reward SIM card (this is different to a standard Three Pay As You Go SIM.)

When ordering a Data Reward SIM card, you are required to pay an upfront charge of £5. The SIM will be delivered to you with 1GB of data which expires after 30 days. After that, you will receive 200mb of data free every month.

Should you need to make calls or send text messages, then you will need to top up the SIM (minimum top up is £2) and Three’s standard rates for Pay As You Go usage (3p/minute, 2p/text and 1p/MB) will apply. Roaming is also included in the free data as part of Three’s Feel At Home offer.

Remember, to keep receiving 200mb of data, you need to keep your SIM card active by making a chargeable activity at least once every six months. One SMS, one phone call or an add-on bundle all suffice the requirement.

Bump!

I am taking delivery of a new HSE RRS in May (2021).

I would love to get some guidance on what size data plan I should buy for the user-supplied SIM. Most post-paid SIMs in Australia start at 5GB per month. Is that enough to support the vehicle functions, like Real Time Traffic Info? I am not intending to use the vehicle plan for streaming video or supporting a wifi hot-spot. MY21.5 HSE 221KW D16

AIM - I have used less than 1Gb in 21 months, so 5Gb would be way over the top. Obviously the mobile market is different here, but this is what I currently have (24 Gb data valid for 2 years):

The SIM card is (on my 2017 RRS) a full sized SIM. MY17 RRS 4.4d V8 Autobiography - Aintree Green (also referred to on Topix as British Racing Green)

My car came with a card fitted by LR, I think it is standard in the UK. It has 500mb per month and I've had no problems. If you use the car as a mobile hotspot or use streetview on the maps I believes data consumption rises rapidly.

I went overboard on a 2gb card but should've got less than 1gb as I truly use barely anything MY18 SCV8 Satin flux silver

I’ve not received my new car yet, but understand it comes with 500MB a month. I have a few of those 24GB cards so will swop it out if 500mb a month proves to be inadequate.

TBH i can see it being plenty .... until my 2 kids discover the hotspot.....

What does the sim offer? I’ve picked up a 2019 today and other than creating a hotspot in the car, do I really need it? Current - 2019 L494 AB Dynamic

I like the live traffic updates that show on the sat-nav map.

Like Tim, my primary motivation is real-time traffic info. I have had it on my previous 2 X5s and become hooked on the convenience of knowing when I will arrive, options for dodging hotspots, etc.

When I get my RRS, due May, I will explore what else it supports - hopefully internet radio. Swiss Jazz is my regular “station”. MY21.5 HSE 221KW D16
