Don't know about taking it out of P but you can manually release the parking brake at least on the pre 2010 models. This thread helped me in releasing the park brake on mine when I destroyed the brake shoes last month (thanks Bob).

Ok, you prompted me to investigate. I thought that there must be a way.
inside you will see a "bicycle brake" wire with a loop, pull it to release the EPB(you might need a hook to make it easier)
Gearbox P position solenoid: remove the small plastic panel in front of the parking brake lever,
look inside the hole towards the right(you need a flashlight) you should be able to barely make out a white plastic lever. Lift it using a screwdriver(Car key works too) while moving the gear lever (should be the same on RHD)
P.S. Looking at the pictures, it might be the same on post 2010 '08 RRS TDV8 I converted my diesel RRS to run on an environmentally friendly mixture of caribou fat and baby seals oil |

One way to release the EPB you can remove the park brake actuators from the calipers and wind the park brake off manually using torx drive bit.

Thanks Col but that was not my question. "If you could not start due to electrical failure how do you get it out of P and disable the handbrake. " Above explanation is about Disco and I am looking for identical solution but for RRS MY17. Not sure about getting it out of Park, but according to the Workshop Manual that is how you release the L494 EBC if you have electrical failure, it is a totally different setup being electrical operation rather than mechanical as the L320/Disco which is as you say what the previous posts and pictures are referring to.

I remember removing the cup holder on my15 & their is a red lever that you can pull,I’m guessing that’s how to take it out of park. Andy.
