RRS 4.4 V8 (petrol) vs L322 3.6 TDV8

Hi guys,

I currently own a 99 P38 4.6 HSE. Love the car, but its getting old and I miss a bit more modern car to do my longer trips and towing (caravan mostly, but other things too:)).

So I am looking for another RR, but cant really decide what to get.

I have marked out 2 options so far that are on my budget;

2007 (facelift) L322 3.6 TDV8 with 240 000km. Cost around £24 000.
2006 RRS 4.4 V8 (petrol) with only 129 000km. Cost around £18 000.

I know the petrol 4.4 uses more fuel than the 3.6, but that is not my main concern. It looks to me that the RRS is a good deal. I also have heared that the 4.4 V8 (jag engine) is pretty solid. Is this true? And with that low km on it, it does sound tempting. O dont have any experience with the 3.6 engine eighter, I guess it is solid enough except for the turbos that can be a big cost.

But - for towing. The 3.6 has alot of torque and is probably a great towing rig. But how is the 4.4 petrol for towing? Does it have enough power to be a good towing vehicle?
I will be driving around with a 1800kg caravan. Up and down mountains, on the highway etc.

What do you guys think?

Thanks alot!

The jag petrol engine is great
Don’t rule out a 4.2 supercharged either.

RRS have very little boot space.
And if you want to fold the rear seats flat, there isn’t much room for a driver. (Ok for short trips)

The RRS is more modern though

Both engines will tow a 1.8t caravan with ease although the TDV8 will be easier, especially when going up mountains - the turbos help to overcome the altitude which the naturally aspirated 4.4 petrol will notice more. So the petrol will need to be worked harder in those situations.

Both engines have their issues - every engine will have some inherent issues - but both are pretty robust.

The L322 has a bit more room in it, as stated, and the rear seats fold forward as a unit (the seat back drops forward and then the whole seat flips forward). Both give a flat floor as a result, however, unlike later versions.

I must say I'm surprised at the prices - an early model 150k miles L322 shouldn't be £24,000. (Or at least wouldn't be in the UK). 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Do you think the price for the 3.6 is low or high? I havent tried either one of them, so might be things to concider. What I do like about the 3.6 is that it is a facelift with a different (?) gearbox, terrain response, reverse camera, etc. Maybe abit high milage, depends on the service historic.

On the other hand, the RRS has very low milage. Also has a solid engine, even though the 3.6 may be a better towcar. I can deal with the space. Positive is I have had D3 for many years, so know the car technically. I have no experience with the L322.

If you know d3, the RRS sounds right for you.

Reverse cam can be fitted if you want Mods: FaceLift/D4 Sat Nav Display and reverse camera. BT. Remote FBH. Parking light switch position. Rear reading light activated by doors.
