I have no record of any gearbox oil change and although I have not any Gearbox issues I think it's high time the oil was changed.

So, the independent (ex JLR mechanic ) I use does not have the facilities to carry out a flush. So the question is.... Is just a box oil change ok or is a flush recommended instead & why

Go for a flush everytime, it's the only way to actually change all of the oil. Empty and refill only does a percentage of the total amount. 2010 RRS, TDV8

Others have had a flush and the change afterwards is sublime, just when you thought it was good anyway. I had mine done which I thought was smooth. I had the oldest car but the lowest mileage and mine was filthy. 2006 2.7 TDV6 HSE in Cairns Blue.

Got for a Megaflush and use Bodsy who is mobile out of Telford so comes to you.

The reason for the flush is that the majority of the gearbox oil is in the torque converter. This isn't emptied when you take the drain plug out so you only replace a proportion of the oil by doing that. That's the reason why the official oil change is actually a double change - empty via the plug, refill, run, repeat. This still doesn't change all of the oil, it just dilutes the old stuff with new.

A flush connects to the gearbox cooling loop and then pumps oil through the whole gearbox and so replaces all of the oil int he torque converter too. Sure, it may not be 100% but it'll be better than 95% and certainly way more than the official change method.

I've had my SDV6 gearbox flushed twice in the 4 years (Rob?) I've had it. Most recently was just a few weeks ago when it had a service with 110,000 on the clock. Previously I had it done at about 70,000. Assuming I still have the vehicle then, it'll be done again in another 45,000 miles or so. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

I've been looking in to this for a while and been quoted anywhere between £360-£600 for a Megaflush.

I can get 20ltrs of Mannol AG55 ATF for £87 so am having trouble justifying the cost of paying a garage to do the job knowing the cost of the ATF.

I know Bodsy offers this service but I'm too far down South to call on him and I don't fancy tackling this job myself.

Just wondering if there are any members down South that can do this?

Just to follow on from this thread, if anyone can help advise me.

I’m quoted 370+vat at Bristol transmissions for megaflush. Seems a tad expensive but tbh I’m happy to go along with that as it’s being recommended everywhere I look. They upselled having the filter changed too think an extra 30/40 does anyone know is this is necessary or not? Car is on 116k miles... Thanks

The 2010-2011 (6 speed) models are the easiest to perform a flush at home if you are a DIYer.
