New battery options... just checking...

Hi,

Just checking all my options in preparation for purchasing a new battery.

Reading the above I just wanted to make absolutely sure... am I right in understanding that I can replace the wet battery in my 2005 2.7 RRS with an AGM battery?

(Currently using a wet Platinum: size 019 : 12v : 90 Ah : 800 CCA. 5 years old.)

Although my dear old 2005 L320 is obviously not a start /stop I only do regular short trips now and it's mostly parked up in relatively high temperatures for most of the year here with only mild winters.

As always your thoughts & comments appreciated. Bow down

Thanks. Barrie.

No problem replacing your "wet battery" with a stop/start AGM, not sure how much difference the stop/start aspect will really make, had a Varta G14 (019) stop/start AGM on mine for 5 years and never had a flat battery or fail to star albeit a MY13 S/C, main consideration would probably be extra cost for the AGM.

Cheers
Col

If you do lots of short trips, I'd have thought a smart charger with easy disconnect would be a better investment than a "stop/start" battery.

Car batteries can last for years if they're kept well charged and not too warm. It's letting them get down to low charge levels regularly and for long periods that they don't like. Being stored at high temperature with low charge is also not good for them. All of this can lead to permanent sulphation which then limits how much charge the battery can hold. Increasing sulphation will lead to a dead battery. Suplhation is a natural process in the use of the battery but in a well charged battery it's a reversible process. A low charged battery can become permanently suplhated and then can't be properly charged. Then it's a downhill run to a dead battery.

A decent smart charger connected when the vehicle isn't being used, will keep the battery at 100% charge and the battery will thank you by lasting much longer. Your alternator will be working less hard too so that's a win. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Thanks @RRSTDV8. I never let the battery get too low and I have a Ring RSC612 SmartCharge Premium Plus charger. I'd like to have a decent trickle charger or a solar charger but from what I've been told previously these shouldn't be connected permanently to the battery - and my 2005 doesn't have separate / isolated terminals. Maybe you could confirm or correct if that's not the case.

The battery that's on there now is nearly 5 years old and never let me down but is now only charging up to 80%.

Always happy to receive ideas & suggestions. Thumbs Up Barrie.

I've got a lidl ultimate speed charger i've had for years in what was my garage, then a cable running to a 12s socket and flying lead to the car via that 12s socket. Works brilliantly, only use the car 2/3 times a week on short trips. If it ain't broken down it soon will

Hello All,
Its been a while since I started this thread, so I am almost ready to
take the plunge, as I stated in the third post I have found the following,

Powerplus "LIFETIME"
Size 019
Ampere Hours - 100
CCA (SAE) - 1100
Technology - AGM
Weight - 27 kg

Not sure about the guarantee period but
for £235 is this a good deal or have you
knowledge of a better one??

Thanks in advance... ===========================================

I fitted one of these, and reset the BMS with the Gap IID tool seems to do the job ok, only comes with 4 year guarantee not a lifetime one, but at half the price, Exide are OEM for land rover batteries I think.
