Ham radio operators ?

Good morning to all, had the 2012 sport for a month or two now so time to had a few extras. I was thinking of putting the ft8900 in the car but told to watch out for ecu and rf problems and was wondering if anyone else has had problems?.

Also where and how are you mounting your antennas, I currently have no rails or roof bars on the roof.

Any help appreciated, regards Andy.

I have a 2019 RRS SDV6 and I installed an Icom IC7100 with the usual precautions, direct power from the car battery terminals, screened cables, Automatic HF antena tuner, good grounding, plenty of capacitors and ferrite tores, quality coax and antennas, ect ect... and so far no problems with the car electronics when transmitting in HF,VHF or UHF and no QRM from the car electronics, except for some slight noise on some HF low bands (but nothing notable on 10 or 6 meters) when the engine is running, probably comming from the alternator or maybe its regulator

Consequently I think you can give a try to your FT8900 on your RRS, you should not have problems providing the installation is correct because your TX has less power than mine on HF but keep in mind it has more power than mine on VHF AND UHF and I have checked the effect of VHF AND UHF transmission with only 25 watts max and you have 50 watts, it can make real difference
Nevetheless, it is worth a try

Regarding antennas mounting, I mounted them on a roof bar, the UHF/VHF antenna is fed by coax, placed in the middle of the car roof which acts as a ground plane and the HFantenna is on the side, close to the edge of the roof and fed as a long wire with an automatic antenna tuner located in the car boot
My TX like yours has a detachable front so I installed the TX itself in the boot close to the antenna tuner and the detachable front in the glove compartment

Passing all the interconnecting wires cleanly is quite a chalenge but not more than for any mobile installation on any car

Thanks for the replies guys, think I will just give it a go and see what happens. Tyrefitter what a list of radios I loved the Lincoln and must admit to keep looking at the new version at Knight's across in Kirton on Lindsay.
