Fitting a winch: Part 2

Part 1.

FirstFour made three leads of 0.9m, which allowed the control box to be sited on the bracket.



Before the bumper went on, I used some jump-leads to power the system and check the motor ran (and in the correct sense). The bumper has to be cut to fit around the tray (this ultimately meant cutting-out the areas shown in the yellow boxes as well).




Next thing was to get rid of the plastic webs behind the bumper. I was a bit too conservative and after the picture was taken cut out the adjacent pair of webs.

Using a step-drill, I made a couple of holes so that I could see the fixings for the fairlead (these are internally-threaded round bar). A couple of lengths of threaded rod meant I could slide the fairlead up to the bumper and mark it out.

And then it went pear-shaped...


...rained-off for twenty minutes, I came back and cut to the "wrong" line. Embarassed Big Cry Skoollboy error, ruining what is an otherwise concours vehicle.

With the fittings as supplied, the fairlead would be behind the bumper. I didn't want a big 'letterbox' in the bumper and so added to each side a 25mm spacer (and a couple of washers) so that it sits flush. Only time will tell whether it will remain strong enough under any side-loads.




The gap around the fairlead looks rubbish. I hate myself.




The number-plate holder covers everything.




The clutch lever remains easily accessible.




Even though there is a wireless remote, I cut the wire to the wired remote and wired in an IP68 socket, the solder-buckets on the other side potted with epoxy.





Even part of the car seems to be sharp and/or hot and/or moving so, after staring at it for a long time, the +ve wire was routed in lengths of conduit into the 'battery box' where the ABS is, to an isolator switch and along to the battery via a mega fuse. This was an extended wiring kit in 35 mm² cable.




Off to give the synthetic rope a stretch...

Suggestions for a 'quick release' number-plate mount appreciated!

Why not a small bit of checker plate roughly number plate sized cut to fit and pop-riveted to the bumper?

I would have suggested something like THESE for quick removal of the plate when needed. Might be a bit more practical than the flipper, which in a tow situation might get broken.

There's no 'tongue-in-cheek' emoticon to go with the 'concours' comment.

We have some of those clips on our trailer. Not as cool though!

Good idea. A piece of laser-cut checker-plate might be just the ticket. Thumbs Up

I picked-up some good winch-blankets from eBay - lots of velcro and pockets to add some extra mass. For about four decades we winched boats up the beach on 300 m of steel cable - only twice did it 'let go' and it was quite 'educational'. Shocked

I'm going to replace the isolation switch with a 500 A relay. Doing so will give me scope to run the +ve cable to the battery in some conduit.

I knew there was another photo. First pass at grounding it. Copper a bit too thick as the nuts don't have threads to the end. Bolt needs brazing...



Someone, somewhere probably sells these.

First method for gaining access to the winch is Lindab's suggestion, wired into the switch that activates the 500A isolation relay. It is allegedly IP67, but time will tell. Needs a bit of a tweak or two.



Fusion360 -> 3d printer -> car.



And, yes, my car is as clean and tidy on the inside as it is on the outside... Embarassed
