All Terrain Tyres

So one of the first changes I want to make to my 2010 TDV6 is to fit All-Terrain tyres, for the type of usage my RRS is going to get they will be a godsend.

However..

Do I just take get the same size tyres as fitted to the car now (275-40-20) or am I better to downsize to 19" rims or fit slightly different profile rubber to my current 20" rims?

Ideally you'd go to 19s and fit 255/55. That would give slightly more sidewall than the 275/45/20 already mentioned and gives a reasonable number of tyres to choose from. Thumbs Up 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Any issue with 19s fitting over calipers or anything like that or is it a straight swap, no speedo discrepancies or anything?

I run 19s on my SDV6 and ran the same rims on my previous TDV8 which had the four-pot calipers. No issues with either.

There is a slight change in speedo reading because you are running a larger overall size than standard. That applies to either the 275/45/20 or the 255/55/19 options, of course. The 255/55/19 is slightly bigger so has a slightly bigger change to the speedo although it's never been an issue for me (so far!).

What sort of off road use will be your RRS be subjected to? I found the Grabber AT3 to be decent with good performance on stony tracks in Spain and on the Strata Florida and surrounding routes in Wales; they did pick up a couple of side wall cuts in Wales caused by being deep ruts with stones in the side, I think. Not amazing in wet muddy grass but then lots of tyres struggle in that. On road they were excellent although they got a bit slippery in the wet as they wore down past half worn. No noise issues when worn, however, unlike the previous Grabber AT did. AT3 is available in 275/40/20 and 275/45 as well as 255/55/19 and 255/50. Also it's winter rated and performed well in the snow last year.

Currently have the Pirelli Scorpion AT+ fitted. A bit softer on road with less steering bite but just as comfortable and quiet as the AT3. Haven't taken them off road yet. Land Rover had them fitted to their vehicles in Spain last year. Limited to 255/55/19 on the RRS. Winter rated but haven't had chance to try it out in snow/ice. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Also, only certain variations of 19" wheels fit over Brembo callipers, if you have them. Do a search on here for which ones.

2005 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Zambezi Silver

I have a 2009 TDV6 HSE facelift and have just done the same about a week ago.

Swapped out 275/40/20 on the specced 20" 15 spoke 'style 3' alloys with 255/50/19 on the 19" 5 V-spoke 'style 1' alloys.

Running General Grabber AT3 tyres.

There is no discernible increase in road noise and road handling seems fine. The tyre is rated to 130mph.

I hope this helps.

Sorry,

I forgot to add that I looked into comparisons of wheel and tyre sizes beforehand. From memory, a 255/50/19 will be 1.3% less on the speedo than the stock 275/40/20. Hardly anything to worry about in my mind.

Besides my previous 2005 2.7 TDV6 HSE had as standard, the the same 19" wheels and tyre size that I have just put on.

Hope this helps.

All of the above really does help a great deal...

I think that rather than fitting ATs to my 20" rims that are on the car at the moment I'll get a set of 19" rims and go down that route... probably Grabber AT3s as I ran AT2s on a previous Jeep for 4 years and they were fantastic.

Usage wise I'll be on some green lanes, the odd pay and play site, Salisbury Plain and (mostly) towing a horsebox through muddy, slippery fields!

I'm new to the world of RRS so need to educate myself on wheel model numbers, but will make sure that the 19s I choose will fit!

Thanks for all the advice everyone, as a forum newbie it's lovely to have sensible responses to my queries..
I've found a decent set of AT3 in 255/55/19 that may well be coming home... just the rims to sort now!

i run General Grabber on my MY10 3 litre oil burner, basically had 3 tyres go in 2 trips, and i take
it reasonably easy and sensible, so be aware the sidewalls on GG's are not the toughest.. Another Pommie Bar Steward down under

The problem with sidewalls is that if you find the wrong bit of rock, it'll take out the sidewall no matter what. We can't easily get the tougher tyre options on the RRS (at least in the UK) so it's always going to be a risk. On three trips around Les Comes (which is all stony/rocky) I only ever suffered a couple of minor surface marks. A trip to mid Wales in a mix of stony and muddy environments saw me suffer a cut down to the cords (not enough to hole the tyre or cause a bulge). Those trips were a mix of Grabber AT (Les Comes) and Grabber AT3 (Les Comes and Wales). One of the vehicles on the Wales trip suffered a puncture on the road section having safely completed the Strata Florida on pure road tyres.

We have a member here who fitted Duratracs (considered to be better than the AT/AT3 in the sidewall stakes) and took out a sidewall on his first trip! (It was your first trip on them wasn't it Hugh?)

It's a lottery at the end of the day... 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Just get 255 55 20's and keep your existing wheels. The newer sport came with 255, 55 20 as standard. I have them on mine with no issues. If you are concerned about the tyre circumference, you can use the iid tool and change the config to 55's MY12 RRS HSE
