ok, well the longer it goes on the more i am confused. i have a whine when travelling above approx 40mph. when it first appeared i would swear it was a rear bearing. i checked for play when i replaced the rear breaks + shoes but i didn't find any play.

when i am driving now i'm not so sure it could be coming from the centre of the car or even the front...

my milage is 113k so i am wondering if it could be either the transfercase / diffs or indeed a wheel bearing..... (i doubt gearbox due to it being speed related and not revs related)

can anyone point me in the right direction, i have tried you tube and haven't found a similar example. i will try and record it and post tonight / tomorrow but not sure my phone will pic the noise up.....

FYI - I have a 2010 facelift 3.0 TDV6

I have exactly the same problem started two weeks ago mines going to independent tomorrow will let you know what they say.

Its a new front differential on mine!!!

How did they prove it?

Experience??? I dont know I do IT. Cost with transmission oil and filter change and engine oil and filter change and MOT £1600 Including VAT, if that helps. Start saving, Rear one will probably need doing soon.

In my old TDV6, I remember having a whining noise from the front end if memory serves and it ending up being a knackered alternator... pain the proverbial, but not as horrific as a drive shaft! 2008 RRS HSE Stornoway Grey

i had similar on older RRS.
it was in the end the left rear wheel bearing.
it was not so clear from trying to check for play in it.
but i knew it had to be because the the noise was speed dependent.
one thing you could do it check on an open road by driving and swerving left and right.
this is how i knew it had to be left side.... you could notice a change in sound when serving right.

anyway... just 2p from my last whine in the back

Not diagnosed yet MGO...

I don't take anything on face value...

I will be spending a couple of hours over the weekend crawling underneath it to try and confirm with at least 99% certainty

I would start a separate tread and search the forum for other diff faults to confirm the symptoms. I'm not familiar with diff faults so can't comment sorry.

Can some one recommend a brand of bearings?
