Considering a steering wheel disc lock

Another stolen RRS in my area last night, he had his keys inside in a faraday pouch and keyless entry turned off, and still they managed to take it! God knows how? It’s his 2nd in 5 months!

I’m considering fitting a steering wheel disc lock, to hopefully put them off taking mine

Any experience or recommendations?

Or any other ideas? Had ghost alarms mentioned, but not to sure what these are?

If we did have another alarm/immobiliser fitted, would it be a problem with the warranty?

John

The disc lock is very visible. They don't want to be making any noises so will move on to someone else. I would go for it

2013 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Stornoway Grey

Pity that the RRS has so many controls and an airbag on the steering wheel as last summer I bought a removable steering wheel and a steering column lock for my Defender. The steering column lock covers the boss and is free-wheeling so they cannot use a pipe wrench to turn the steering, it also cannot be jemmied off.

I have a feeling whatever was causing them to be stolen was quietly changed in MY18 onwards with the new keys.

Don't ask me what though but yes was very common thing in London for MY15/MY16 cars to be taken or at least opened, not sure about MY17 have a feeling they did a half-fix around that time.

My experience with a disk lock, albeit a long time ago is that they are a pain to store in the car when you are travelling with passengers unless you want to get out and put it in the boot every time,. The newer ones are even longer / more bulky. RRS MY17 SDV6 AB

I used a disklock on my previous and current RRS. Yes it is a bit fiddly to remove and you need to be careful that it doesn't flip open while taking in / out of the car as it could easily cause a dent or chip some paint away.

But.....I think at the very least it provides a good visual deterrent and am happy to put up with a bit of inconvenience.

Yes this is the one I’m going for, although I was going to get the small, as it states it for sizes 35-38.9cm, and the medium is for 39-41.5cm. I measured our wheel at 38cm

It’s basically this

Back in 2015 there was a recall on all 2013 onwards vehicles across the range I think. There was apparently a hardware problem with the keyless system that allowed the key signal to be copied to a blank key without needing access to the key or car. The fix, as eluded to above resolves the problem and also stops additional keys being programmed to the vehicle. This was different to the current keyless repeater attack, that seems to be de’rigueur at the moment.

There is also the old problem of an OBD key coder being plugged in by someone with nefarious intent. MY15.5 HSE

I use a ‘small’ on mine. Perfect fit.

Don’t forget to buy the wheel ‘bra’ protector that slides over the steering wheel before fitting. It protects the leather steering wheel a treat. SOLD - MY16 SDV6 Autobiography Dynamic - Fire Engine Red, Fixed contrast pan roof, TV, Dual Screen, 5+2, Privacy, Noble paddles.

Thanks mate,

What protector do you use? Is it the disklok one? I have seen these, but they have mixed reviews - some saying it’s too thin and doesn’t really work?

Yes it’s the official disklok ‘bra’. I’ve been using it for 5years on all the cars I’ve owned and I’ve never had any issues with the leather being marked and/or indented. The leather wheel on my previous RS4 was very soft and the ‘bra’ protected that for two years, no issues.

It is quite thin but it needs to be, because when used with the small Disklok on the RRS it creates a very snug fit. Once you have the nack and rhythm of taking it all on and off, it’s second nature. When not in use the bra lives in my door pocket and my disklok lives behind my seat on the floor. SOLD - MY16 SDV6 Autobiography Dynamic - Fire Engine Red, Fixed contrast pan roof, TV, Dual Screen, 5+2, Privacy, Noble paddles.
