Metallic click from front on drive

So far I have had new PRO Bush ARB’s fitted to front. Both top and bottom suspension bushes replaced. Rear lower wishbones and upper rear bushes all replaced - it failed its MOT on the mushes.

SO as per an earlier post my 2007 TDV8 with132,000 miles on it is knock free for the 1st time in its life.

BUT this has allowed the click / clunk noise from the front to be heard more clearly.

If I press the accelerator and then ease off it makes a metallic clunk noise from the front - I think. As an example today I was doing about 35 mph and eased off the accelerator and ‘clunk’!

It does it when I move off in drive - sometimes, and when I move off in reverse!

Diffs? CV? Transfer box? Prop shaft? Drive shafts? A trapped unicorn?

Any ideas would be gratefully received.

UPDATE

So finally we were able to get underneath the beast. Turns out it is the rear propshaft bush. The bearing is literally floating in thin air. New part ordered from AF Bow down Previously owned 1999 Disco 2 TD5

How do know if the knocking at the front has been sorted?

You can hear the knocking at the rear better

Could be the engine mounts - the TDV8 has "active" mounts that help to control its bulk. They look to be a pain to replace. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Don't CV joints make a tick tick noise if lock is applied?
Might be worth taking off the heat shield that covers the rear prop shaft (5/6 nuts from memory) then you can check that the rubber between the shaft and centre carrier hasn't split. If its failed it's possible that the shaft will clunk against the carrier and you will be able to replicate a clunk by hand. Mine had split but not totally failed. If it's the original prop, chances are that the UJ's are notchy.

I’ll have a look at these. Will there by any noticeable play if I try to move the engine about? Previously owned 1999 Disco 2 TD5

I’m favouring the CV joints, but the noise doesn’t happen all the time, and seems to happen even when not on full lock.

I had thought about the shaft and the rubber part, so again will look at this. Previously owned 1999 Disco 2 TD5

Did you ever get to the bottom of this. My 2010 3.0tdv6 seems to be doing the same.

Yes, sorry I had thought I had updated all my posts when I left the site. I no longer have the L320 Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry

It was one of the front drive shaft gaiters that had failed and it had thrown all the grease out.

So I replaced both front driveshafts and the full prop-shaft as the central bearing had disintegrated. Previously owned 1999 Disco 2 TD5
