yeah that's a good point to check if the vapour is only coming out of one exhaust.


mind you the diesels have an EGR on each side.

Yeah there's more vapour from the left side I think. I'll check when I take it out in a few mins. One side definitely seems worse than the other. Not sure if that points to either EGR or HG though. Is EGR a bigger job than HG, or is that an unknown?

Sorry can't tell you either scope or cost as it was a warranty job done by a main dealer - two weeks before it ran out.

Not much vapour today but it's a warm day. Slightly more coming out of the drivers side exhaust pipe.

EGR should be a much easier job that HG.

Just need to work out what it is so you don't do the job twice and pay 5 times as much as required.

So you need some copper pipe or something to bypass the EGR on the exhaust side that is worst,

Can you see anything like this under the bonnet ?
Probably at the back of the engine where you can't see it on a RRS

The black pipe is the coolant.
Metal pipe goes to exhaust

Probably only one of them on petrols.

Is an option to consider blanking off the EGR permanently and then see what happens? Or am I talking out of my bottom again. Robin

Coolant would still leak from the EGR into the exhaust.


If you don't want to try and bypass the EGR coolant pipes as a test,

you could try getting a quote for replacement of the EGR.

I would imagine taking a guess (or ruling out the EGR) would be many times cheaper/quicker than HG replacement although no guarantee with the outcome.

But I don't know what EGR access is like on the RRS

Thanks all. I'm not comfortable bypassing them by myself, but I'm awaiting a call back from a garage nearby who have a good rep and do lots of LR troubleshooting so I think I'll get them to have a look at it. Fingers crossed it's EGR, but whatever needs doing will have to be done!

Had lots of vapour yesterday and it was out of both sides that time. Still wondering if it has anything to do with my lumpy idle problem, hopefully they'll take a look at that too.

Car is in being looked at right now. Seems one of the cats is potentially damaged maybe by coolant in the exhaust, but yet to be seen. They found a water pump gasket and bolt in the under tray as well. I haven't had the water pump replaced and I can't remember if it was done previously, must have been I suppose! They ran a test overnight to see if any coolant was getting into the cylinders so I'm just waiting to see the outcome of that. Current feeling is the head gasket though by the sounds of it.

I'm glad I've found a garage who agree it isn't running right!

Gasket job being done and picking car up late next week. Eye watering bill. Going to see how the cat is after the gasket fix before deciding on when to replace it. Mechanic reckons it'll run just fine but it'll need doing obviously before the next MOT.

I've got a feeling the cylinder that had water in is the same cylinder that threw a misfire last year twice out of the blue and put the car into limp mode constantly. Nobody ever found out what that was. Seems odd that it would put me into limp mode back then, but not now even though the gasket is properly on its way out now.

Is a gasket failure at ~75,000 miles rare for these cars? Have to say I have lost my patience with this one after having a pretty good run with my 2.7, I love it but it's never felt 100%. There's no point getting rid of it after paying a big garage bill though, so I'll stick with it and see if this sorts it once and for all.

If it does then happy days, I can finally enjoy it without worrying it'll limp on me on the m4 with no hard shoulder.
