When you say you have to switch them on manually, do you mean you have to turn the switch from the auto position back to normal headlight position then back to auto, or turn them completely off and back to auto again?.

no sorry I have to turn them to the on position , as they don't work in the auto position at all |

Loose connection or contact point in/at the switch, or a similar issue at the sensor ? |

Have you checked fuse No.18 in the passengers side fuse box? as this appears to cover the Light Sensor for Auto Lamps, also covers Rain Sensor but if rain sensor works then would appear fuse is ok.

I believe the auto lamp sensor is mounted on the windscreen behind the rear view mirror, as I think it is an integral part of the rain sensor. Possibly check Fuse 67 as well.
