Odd Occurence

Yesterday afternoon I'd just started a journey when suddenly the engine started noisily racing and the rev counter leapt up to twice it's normal reading.

I stopped....turned off....gave it a minute or two then started up again and all was well.

Never come across this before......can anyone diagnose the possible cause ?

I had this once on a 2.4 D5 Volvo - accelerated hard and then when I came to change gear, revs just went mad.

It was to do with some sort of chain combustion but it was because I'd burnt out the pistons on the engine due to some Censored mechanic having put a new engine in but not attached one of the sensors correctly (in fact at all) so it was letting too much air in and running too hot.

Its probably not related to your issue but definitely get the fault codes read, its not normal behaviour.

Thanks to both of you

I'll get the fault codes read as you suggest.

Is it at a gear up-change point? Low transmission fluid or torque convertor issue?

Solved

I must confess that the problem was all my fault.

It happened twice more and then my son pointed out that I was clicking the "gear down paddle" on the side of the steering wheel by accident whilst steering.

(Clumsy old fool....maybe should have stuck with a simpler car)

If it bothers you, you can turn the paddles off using the menu available from the steering wheel. Well, you can on mine!

No...the option to disable them doesn't appear in the little window so we're stuck with it.
(Must say I don't quite see the point of them and they clutter up the steering wheel)

It's because the 2012 model has the silly round gear selector and not a proper gear lever so there has to be some way of manually selecting gears when off road. I'm in the shed, I'll be back in the real world in a minute.

Oh I see....I did wonder what the reason was.

I love that circular "disappearing" selector though...(always did like gadgets)....and as I never go off road it doesn't affect me.

Ha ha, the silly round gear selector is what appealed to me over the stick - sticks are for manuals...!

Maybe it's the same with newer models, but Jaguar have it sorted as my XF (with silly round selector) could have paddles disabled when in Drive, with just a quick change to Sport and have use of paddles. Makes sense to me as D can be for lazy driving, then S for offroad, manual control, or whatever. Accidentally knocking the paddles when in D really frustrates me. 13MY Range Rover Sport Autobiography SDV6 - mine

It begs the question if Jaguar can isolate the paddles when in drive, then why can't the same parent company using the same basic equipment do the same in a Range Rover?

Given a choice I'd much rather a manual gearbox, but JLR took that option away from Range Rovers and their bigger jaguars.
At least the RRS2 has a stick, and I can look forward to that when I change cars.

Everyone has their own preference. Thumbs Up I'm in the shed, I'll be back in the real world in a minute.

You, should be able to turn them off, I believe, (or a JLR dealership) using a GAP Diagnostic IID BT tool if you have one.
A very good tool and code reader which allows you to adjust so much. Thumbs Up John
