Oil leak and coolant loss TDV8

Hi,

I've got a '07 RRS TDV8 and a few weeks ago the coolant pipe going into the top of the engine just below the turbo pipes blew off, luckily when it happened I was right next to a pull in so travelled a matter of meters and had the engine shut off before most of the coolant drained.

I refitted the pipe, refilled the coolant at the side of the road and all seemed fine, temperature was normal and heaters worked so assumed there were no major air locks. A few days later I noticed it was losing coolant so I took it to a garage to be bled properly but it is still losing coolant. A friend in the unit next to mine is a breaker so we got it up in the air and can't find any leaks, the garage that bled it also confirmed no leaks.

I have done a mix of journeys, the longest being 90mins, temperature remains normal, idle sounds and power output is the same as usual.

On top of the coolant loss there appears to be an oil leak from the rocker cover. Has anyone encountered this on the TDV8 and is it just the case of a new gasket?

Obviously my concern with the coolant loss is that the engine has been damaged when the pipe came off, I would really appreciate people's thoughts on some causes and solutions to both issues!

Thanks,

Alex

Not had the problem on my TDV8 but from having carried out a fair bit of my own servicing I've noticed that there are many pipes and connections in the cooling system that are not easily examined without removing things. Examples that spring to mind are the pipes to the auxiliary radiator in the O/S front wheelarch and the transmission cooler near the front crossmember . To get a good look at these you need to remove some of the lower splash shields and the engine undertray.

Worst case scenario is a leaking head gasket allowing coolant into the cylinders or oilways. I think a good garage can use a sniffer to detect combustion products in the coolant as a test for this. Similarly apocalyptic is a coolant leak in the transmission cooler causing contamination of the transmission fluid and again a good specialist can test the fluid for presence of coolant contamination.

The EGR valves have coolant circulating around them and maybe it is possible to get a leak into the exhaust if something in there has failed?

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will be along shortly to add some better information. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

The pipe coming off wont have caused any damage if you only travelled a matter of metres after it happend. Your unlikely to have overheated it. Id imagine its more like that air has got trapped in the system and is working its way to the bottle. Id just keep an eye on it for a week or two and top up as required. If it persists then id start looking at other possible causes but for now just monitor
