Worn tyres - Suspension geometry please

Hi,

Not been on here for a while, Just replaced front brake pads/discs, and noticed the inner edge of both front tyres worn, tyres were new last year! less than a year old and now need replacing again.
I though with the inner edge being worn the tracking would be toe out, but according to the readings I've just got it is toe in 5' of 1 degree.

What should the geometry be - 2007 RRS TDV6. I'e seen somewhere that the Landrover settings are not right, is this correct? if so what are the correct settings before I put some new rubber on?

Ive seen the camber is adjustable if not seized, is the castor adjustable too? Off so where is it adjusted?

Also seen about this tight tolerance mode, can I not just leave the door open or remove the battery to stop it moving?

Cheers.............Boost

Boost - remember your post about the DIY turbo change; is it still all good?

Re your alignment question the specifications are in this pdf:

http://www.rrsport.co.uk/gallery/albums/us...0specs.pdf

The castor can be adjusted; look in this pdf for the full procedure:

http://www.rrsport.co.uk/gallery/albums/us...gnment.pdf

Alignment specialists have the ability to put the vehicle in to tight tolerance mode. If a place doesn't have the ability I would go elsewhere.

Ideally I think to get perfect alignment you need to first have a Land Rover specialist inspect the suspension for worn bushes etc replacing where necessary and also check the height calibration since it affects the readings. The best way to find a good alignment place is to search on the Hunter site http://www.alignmycar.co.uk/?gclid=CLzbmq_-39ECFcKVGwodzcQDvA

Good luck - hope you get it fixed. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

I had all kinds of woes trying to get the tracking sorted on mine, the default setup that Land Rover use will wear the inside of your tyres.
I had mine tracked by TS Norman and afterwards he was saying he tracks them slightly differently so that this uneaven wear pattern is avoided. Since Steve has tracked it mine has been great.

Long story short, you go to quickfit (who have hunter alignment) and your inner tyres will be bald, take it to an indi who knows his job and your tyres will last!

It is worth noting that using the 'align my car' website won't find any Kwik Fit centres. Possibly because Hunter won't give them full approval. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Hey Paddi,

I should probably look myself but I thought I would ask you Thumbs Up

How do you mean full approval ? The kwickfit in my home town has a full hunter setup as does Yeovil.

Hi Paddi, Yes Turbo never missed a beat since I changed it, all still good!

Top links there - Thanks

I've got some tracking gear and a castor/camber gauge so want to try and set it up myself - Don't like paying people for stuff I can do.

I just need the settings, looks like LR specs are not the best for tracking, but cannot find a definitive answer from anyone as to what the best settings are.... Wonder if the camber/castor are the same?

Well, Replaced the brake pad wear sensor that I managed to smash whilst changing the discs & pads and found the wish bone buses shagged on both sides! That would explain the tyre wear then!

Do I freeze a lot more and change them myself or let the stealer do it? How much would this cost, plus alignment?

Cheers............Boost.

Faced with the same dilemma recently I wimped out of freezing my arse off for hours outside and had a had a very good Indy change both lower arms for Land Rover sourced parts - think the arms were about £500 for the pair plus about 3 hours labour. Alignment varies a lot but even at 'down south' prices not more than £150

Changing just the bushes is definitely possible for a determined DIY like yourself although said to be a right PIA but is much much less expensive. Site sponsor Advanced Factors supplies OEM arms and pattern arms with a range of bush choices or just the bushes at decent prices so worth checking them out. Lots of info on the Disco 3 site about how to do it.

Good luck! 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

The Hunter website just says the centres listed have their "full approval" but perhaps all that means is the centres have paid to be on it. I may be able to find out as I know the owner of a local place that has Hunter kit and is listed on their website. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Just used that site to find a place to align my dads sport. Put my post code in and the top of the list was where my lad started his apprentiship last week. He told me he was learning the 4 wheel alignment, but I didn't realize it was this system.
He said the guy that is his mentor is an amazing mechanic.

When I bought my RRS it pulled to the left. The dealer I bought it from took it to Kwik Fit in Hemel, they adjusted it using their Hunter equipment but it still pulled to the left, albeit not quite as much.

It was really spoiling the driving experience so I took it to Discount Tyres in Luton. Their equipment showed the two rear wheels were out of alignment, they corrected it and it tracks perfectly now. Thumbs Up

So, moved one of the kit cars out and put under a cover, so I could get the RRS in the garage! Heater on makes a lot of difference to outside!

Got the wish bones replaced, one side a tw@t, to remove - needed gas axe! And the other side OK.

Set both camber and castor adjustment in middle of slot to begin with - initial settings are 1.50 deg neg camber both sides and track toe out 0 deg 27'. Castor no idea as I haven't got and steering plates/pads yet to check.

So what are the best settings? From reading on here I feel LR settings are maybe not the best?

The settings I think I'm going for are proposed below....

RRS TDV6 2007 RHD 18" Wheels

.......................L/Rover..............Proposed
Camber LH......-0.5 deg..............-1.0 deg
Camber RH......-0.38 deg............-0.75 deg
Toe.................-0 deg 10' (out)...+0 deg 15' (in)(2mm)
Castor............+4.02 deg............+4.0 deg

Any comments/recommendations?

Why not stick to LR's settings now you've changed the bushes? The stories about bad alignment from the factory are due to the factory setting them up wrong, not bad figures in the book. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed
